Re: Mint 20 & Firefox

Post by SMG »

This is quite the puzzle. My Firefox 79.0 has the "Mozilla Firefox for Linux Mint" with mint 1.0 under it when I check the About screen.

One of the other "customizations" done by Mint is to have the homepage set to a custom URL from the Mint website.
Preferences > Home > Homepage and new windows > select "Custom URLs .." from the drop-down.
I have mine set to "blank" (which is my preference), but the default (I installed a fresh copy of LM20) for Custom URLs is "http://www.linuxmint.com/start/ulyana".

I'm curious what the Fizz install has. That might give a clue as to what is happening.

Shows up that way for me too. No idea if it said something formerly, as I use htop. :)
I just checked my desktop system, which still runs Mint 19.3. The process shows up as Firefox there, complete with its own icon. Curiouser and curiouser...

What is the command line used to launch it? Mine is /usr/lib/firefox/firefox -allow-downgrade

I removed Firefox via Synaptic and installed it via the PPA

And does yours show up as "mint" or as "ubuntu canonical"?

Interesting idea. When i do that (.mozilla folder cleared, so fresh install), it boots to a generic firefox page. It does not load up www.linuxmint.com/start/ulyana.

Curious indeed, as I checked System Monitor for Firefox on my LM 19.3 Cinnamon system, and like LM 20, it shows as MainThread. :)

EDIT: I seem to recall that you didn't update your Firefox for 19.3? Could it still be a version less than 78? If so, tune in here, where I speculate a change was made with version 78.

I also do not have a Firefox process but have MainThread.

I bought a used laptop with a fresh LM19.2 install and it had the homepage set for that install of Mint. The FF homepage was an alternate selection in the drop-down box I mentioned. When I downloaded FF for my Win7 laptop years ago, the homepage default was a Firefox one with no page set as a default Custom URL.

Yes, the version i have on my 19.3 machine is v71. So perhaps the naming is something with a new version. If everyone with 78 and above is seeing MainThread, then i won't worry about that piece of the puzzle. :)

It is clearly there, the Ubuntu version with a lower priority. The question is how it got installed especially because apt shows the Mint version as actually installed on your system.

I compared that with my system:

Are there any other settings for Firefox anywhere, some file or folder, that might not be getting deleted / removed when the package is removed?

If you're doing the Complete Removal option in Synaptic, and deleting/renaming the .mozilla directory, I do not know where any other remnants could be.

Your question is indeed warranted, and I do not claim any sort of omnipotence for what could or could not be lurking elsewhere. :)

Hi,

What does apt policy ubuntu-system-adjustments run in a terminal return?

The Distro label in Firefox's About dialog is modified by /usr/share/ubuntu-system-adjustments/firefox/distribution.ini which is shipped with this package. I've tweaked mine.. :roll:

Running that returns:

Code: Select all

ubuntu-system-adjustments:
  Installed: 2020.07.29
  Candidate: 2020.07.29
  Version table:
 *** 2020.07.29 500

        500 http://packages.linuxmint.com ulyana/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
The Distro label in Firefox's About dialog is modified by /usr/share/ubuntu-system-adjustments/firefox/distribution.ini which is shipped with this package.
Mine looks like it has the correct information (Mint). The contents are:

Code: Select all

[Preferences]
app.distributor="mint"
app.distributor.channel="mint"

# exists for the current used LOCALE
#distribution.searchplugins.defaultLocale="en-US"

# Do not disable our bundled extensions in the application directory
extensions.autoDisableScopes=0
extensions.shownSelectionUI=true

However, i don't think this file is being used. In addition to not using the Mint name, the search engine list does not match how i have it configured in preferences.

So I removed the distribution.ini file (the whole firefox folder actually), and removed and reinstalled Firefox. That folder was not recreated, and it's again back to "Ubuntu Canonical". So it appears that file is not being used, or even re-created in the install. So maybe that's the problem. Why it's not, or how to fix, i do not know.
