Printer quit after Ulyana -- need it working

Post by SteveM2020 »

The first month after Ulyana upgrade from Linuxmint 19.3 Cinnamon, it took a while but I finally got my printer (half working) and the scanner that's part of it would work sometimes. It's an HP 2600 all-in-one deskjet. I want it working, not only the printer half the time, but the printer and scanner both working all the time. Is this reasonable?

I'm also a newbie. I used Windows since 3.11 right through to Windows 10 but accidentally wound up with Linux 3 months before I upgraded to Ulyana. If you start telling me stuff like "ya you got to check your cusp..." I will have no idea what you're talking about, let alone how to access it.

So if nobody here can help me, how do I get a hold of someone who can. I'm on a fixed income and can't afford to hire anyone. I can barely afford food.

If you completely read your results you will see the following..
warning: linuxmint-20 version is not supported. Using linuxmint-19.3 versions dependencies to verify and install...
What it is saying is that at that time your printer is not supported in Mint 20.
If you go to HP website do a search for linux printer drivers for your model printer and d/l and install them, they should contain the latest drivers for mint 20.
Here is the link to those drivers. Ensure you select Linux Mint.

Here is the link for the instructions for installation.

I'm assuming you have connected it via usb.
In terminal copy & paste the following commands and post the results of each command back here between the code display brackets </> The 5th icon along above the text box area.

The HPLIP website version's readme doesn't mention support for Linux Mint 20 being added yet. I wonder if it's to do with Ubuntu's zero printer driver install? Either way, Linux Mint 19.3 is the latest supported Mint at present by hplip 3.20.6. It also doesn't mention Ubuntu 20.04 either apart from the fact it doesn't work.
USB print and scan will not work on Vasari and Taccola on Ubuntu 20.04, please refer to link below
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/cos ... bxd.8.html
TLDR version of the link - You end up with multiple ippusbxd instances of the same device and they cancel each other out.

Sorry to say it Steve but you should have stuck with Mint 19.3 until HP add Mint 20 support to their driver (not as simple as it sounds due to a complete rebase of the operating system).

Just adding that LM 19.x is still supported until April 2023.

That's what my next reply was going to be. You beat me to it.
Go back to Mint 19.3 until such time as hp updates it's drivers.

I am also struggling with my HP1132 MFP after upgrade to Mint 20. I installed hplip using various methods: from repository, from HP website with auto-mode (same result as yours), compiling it myself following the instructions to use qt5. Sadly, there is no effect - the scanner works but printing does not.

I think the Known Issues for Mint 20 needs this HP printer over USB connection issue adding to it. It's not mentioned in either Mint or Ubuntu's known issues and it is quite important. Additionally the HP USB printers and MFP affected will not print with the new automatic detection and configuration supposed to mitigate the need for installing drivers offered by both Ubuntu 20.04 and Mint 20.

Trying this produced errors. I don't know if I can upload screenshots here, or how to go about it so I put three screenshots on IMGUR.

I tried to find and download python3-pyqt4 (PyQt 4- Qt interface for Python (for Qt version 4.x))

No luck.

Any other suggestions I can try?

Thanks,
Steve

Go back to Mint 19.3 for the time being as already suggested. HPLIP devs are aware of the issue, apparently support will be added in the next release of hplip whenever that becomes available.
Hi ,

Linuxmint 20 support is currently not available in HPLIP.
We will provide support in our next release.

MrEen just brought this comment to my attention, you may be able to print with Mint 20 after all. While it mentions scanning rather than printing it is certainly worth a try if it's not too late.
