SOLVED! What type of RAM does my laptop have?

Post by freshtamatic »

My laptop has only 4GB of RAM. I'd like to upgrade it to 8. How can I find out what type and speed of RAM I have and If there is a blank memory slot?
During the windows days, I used to use crucial's profiler, but it doesn't work for Linux.
Any advice on an app that shows that info?

You can get some memory information with inxi. Open terminal and enter

Code: Select all

sudo inxi -m
Get more memory info

Code: Select all

sudo dmidecode --type 17
If dmidecode is not install on your system, enter

Code: Select all

sudo apt install dmidecode
Also can by useful a command

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -short -C memory
In the output you can see if both your memory banks are full or only one.

Are you sure your motherboard can handle 8GB, they all have their limits.

Identify your machine. Someone might have experience with the same machine. You can search for Web pages showing you how to replace the memory. Most include info on what you need and some include info on limitations.

My laptop has two banks that accept 4 GB each. Unfortunately the manufacturer soldered 2 GB in the first slot, limiting me to 6 GB. Luckily LM 20 rarely goes over 2 GB.

If the RAM module has survived being soldered into the slot - could you possibly carefully unsolder it again?
There are small gas burners with a very finely adjustable flame ... or electric soldering irons with temperature setting.

I would then have to solder in a socket for the new memory and change the case to fit it. Not worth it. I will buy a new machine soon and get 16 GB.

Oh, then I misinterpreted the socket: I assumed a completely normal RAM exchange socket (slot?... first slot??).
Already clear that turbo charger bulges on the laptop case cannot be made alongside ...
