[SOLVED] Timeshift being slow

Post by Fizz »

Hi all-

I've used Timeshift regularly, and always do a backup before an update. And it's always been fine in the past. Usually, it accomplishes everything in just a few seconds- thousands of files copied over in mere seconds. I went to do one today, and it's SUPER-slow now. The time estimate keeps going up- initially at about 40 hours, but in a few moments it's at 150 hours, then 300. And at that point i tell it to stop.

Why is it going so slowly? It is so slow i can read the files being examined. So far, they are all in .Trash-0/files and none are system files- they're files i've created (and all ultimately in the home directory, which should be excluded). Not sure if that's related to the trash bin, but i've emptied that anyways.

I've let it run a bit longer now, and it seems to have the occassional big jump. It's been 5 minutes and only about 1700 files have been created, and it's still estimating over 16 hours to complete.

Any idea what's going on? Is it safe to just let it plow through and hopefully finish in a reasonable time?

Sounds like a failing drive. What does SMART report if you run something like Disks?

It's an NVMe drive, so there is no SMART report available.

But i don't think it's the drive. Everything else is running perfectly smoothly and very fast. And the Disk benchmark gives results in line with its specifications.

Another quirk- i seem to have lost space.

Each time i start, it creates a new folder in the /timeshift/snapshots folder. I see several dated today, even though none finished. So when i started today, timeshift told me i had 1.4 TB free. Now it says i only have 1.2 TB free, though these folders typically only have about 15 GB (giga-, not tera-) worth in them.

I started looking through folders to try to figure out where the usage was from. I notice that my /proc directory apparently is using 140.7 TB. How is that possible? The drive is only 2 TB total. I see my laptop system has the same issue with proc, but the laptop doesn't have the issue with Timeshift, so i guess it's not related.

One other thing- in case it's related...

When i look under Disk Usage Analyzer, it tells me that i am using 209.5 GB (that's under / ). This is a 2 TB drive, so that means i'm using about 11% of the available disk space. But Disks, the File Manager, etc, all tell me the drive is 40% full. I don't understand this discrepancy.

By comparison, my laptop with a 1 TB, Disk Usage Analyzer says under / i'm using 91.5 GB (9.1%) and File Manager says i'm using 12%. Much more inline.

So maybe i do have something funny going on with the desktop's drive. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Do you have a flash drive handy? Try saving a manual snapshot to that. Bear in mind, this will be a full backup, so it'll take a while. Then, once you have that, I'd clear all the Timeshift snapshots from the internal drive and start over. If the problem recurs, I'd suspect hardware. If not, I'd chalk it up to the file system having gotten confused and not worry about it.

Well, i only see one proper backup in Timeshift, but several folders of the started (slow) backups in File Manager. So i'll have to remove at least some of them manually. I hope that does not cause a problem.

CtrlAltDel wrote: Sun Oct 11, 2020 8:02 am It won't cause any problem, Fizz. Just delete the one backup that you an see within the Timeshift dialog window by selecting it and clicking on delete from within Timeshift. Then go to the folders that I listed, using your file manager, and open each one of them and check for any backups. Manually delete the ones you find. All of them should be completely empty after you are done.

Close Timeshift, reopen it, and create a new image. I bet it will work fine.
Well, i've given this a try. And unfortunately, nothing is different. It's estimating about 150 hours.. nope, 200 now... still going up. And it'll jump to lower times as it completes certain chores, but it's not any faster than what it was before.

Check your /var/log/timeshift logs and see if there's anything being revealed.

As I said above, this suggests a problem with the drive. Open Disks (from Menu) and look at the SMART data.

This is an nvme drive. There is no SMART option in the Disks menu (greyed out). Is there an alternative to that?

I can say that everything else about the drive seems fine- games load up immediately, my simulations still run smoothly. It boots up fast. The only issue seems to be Timeshift.

@Fizz - I compared your log to mine and what I found is that your timeshift never actually runs rsync. Something is going on before it gets to that point. I don't think it has anything to do with saving to the NVME drive but I don't know. The log doesn't show any errors. Has any snapshot ever completed successfully?

Yeah, up until yesterday, i had created several. Usually i run one before i do a system update.

Here is the last one i did, from August 2. This was on Mint 20. I had done 18 more before that, most of which would have been Mint 19 (if it matters).

Fair enough. The next thing which comes to mind is reinstalling Timeshift: apt install --reinstall timeshift.

Rats. I did the reinstall and restarted it. And still the same behavior.

So, every time it starts, it seems focused on some files in the .Trash-0 folder. See the attached pic.
timeshift1.png
It will sit on that file for a moment, then go blank, then pick up another file with a similar name. These .points files are different versions of files that are used in my astronomy simulations (part of my school research). Those files can be really big (hundreds of MB, sometimes over a GB). But the Trash bin itself is empty, and all these files were stored in my home user folder, never anywhere else, so i don't know why they'd be backed-up anyways (timeshift only backs up system files, or so i thought).

Anyways, don't know if that will help us figure it out, so just putting it out there...

Looking at .Trash-0 through as root, it does have an awful lot of stuff there (345 GB!- that might explain why i'm down on space). Perhaps old files from when i transferred to a back and then deleted and something got out of sync? I don't know.

Should i try deleting everything in the .Trash-0 directory? I don't really know what it's for so don't want to proceed unless i'm sure it's safe. The files in .Trash-0 aren't needed (they are backed up elsewhere already), but i don't want to inadvertently break anything else.

(Also of note- my laptop machine does not have a .Trash-0 folder at all. Only my desktop machine has it. So i really don't know what that is, but i suspect it is part of the issue.)

[15:05:00] /boot/efi is mapped to device: /dev/nvme0n1p1, UUID=3354-C…
[15:05:00] / is mapped to device: /dev/nvme0n1p2, UUID=53746ccb…
[15:05:00] backup_uuid=53746ccb…

Are you Timeshift-ing into the root directory on the same drive AND partition as your system is on?
Would be calling for trouble …

Yep, the snapshot is pointing at partition p2 (p1 is the boot partition).

OK, i did some reading up on that .Trash-0 folder, and it seems that's related to mounted disks. I decided it was safe to delete. So i did.

Immediately i regained all my missing space. I then tried creating a new Timeshift, and it went normally- a brand new saved image in less than 2 minutes. Yay!

So i think what happened is i did a backup to an external drive, and somewhere along there i deleted some stuff too. This somehow got some things out of sync. (Maybe i accidentally pulled the flash drive too early... ? No idea.) So the system was working on those massive GB+ sized files from the .Trash-0 folder.

Now why Timeshift would care about a trash folder for an external mounted drive, i'm not sure. But getting rid of it seems to have fixed everything.

Anyways- hopefully this thread will prove useful to somebody else in the future. Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Do you happen to recall the full path to the folder? Would be helpful for troubleshooting in future. Thanks.
