[SOLVED] activate freePDF under WINE

Post by cecilieaux »

I have installed FreePDF for Windows under WINE, but I can't activate it. Running Linux Mint 20.

I know from another software forum that it does run under WINE (https://forum.softmaker.com/viewtopic.p ... 980#p67980).

My problem comes when I enter the product key, I get an error "The connection to the server failed". The error message gives 4 possible solutions which include

1) checking internet connection (well, I'm here posting this message...)
2) temporary server or network problem, (don't know how to do this in WINE ... WineHQ doesn't have an answer)
3) disable firewall and/or virus protection (tried, no deal)
4) verify internet proxy settings (under Linux Mint they work)

So, gurus, please tell this simple user what to do?

Hi cecilieaux,

With all the PDF applications in Linux, why would you install a MS Windows program and Linux Wine? Using Linux Wine does have some risks.

Note: These instructions are for older Wine installs. If you're using Wine 1.x and your application still fails to do networking, you can give this a try as well. If you're running Wine 1.x and below instructions work for you, file a bug so we can fix Wine to improve other people's experience.

You need to make sure that your hostname resolves to the IP address of your network interface. To verify if you have this problem run hostname -i. If it returned IP address starting from "127." then read on.

To set this up correctly, you can type the following from a terminal:

hostname
This will return your hostname the way your computer sees it. Now, you need to open an editor with system administrator privileges, how you do this will depend on the distribution you are using. Open the file /etc/hosts and see if there is an entry for your hostname. Assuming your hostname is "yourhost" and your network IP address is 192.168.0.23, the entry might look like this:

127.0.0.1 yourhost.yourdomain.com yourhost
Change this to (or add, if there is no such line):

192.168.0.23 yourhost.yourdomain.com yourhost
For most Windows games with networking problems, this is all you need to get networking to work.

Thank you, I examined the suggestions. There are no FREE PDF editors for Linux. Your list of 8 and 10 best had a Master PDF item that was perfect, except that if you don't pay $69 you get their watermark on your pdfs.

Hi cecilieaux,

You are welcome.

Libre office Draw is free and works well. WPS office suite is another option. Scribus is also free with 3 versions; I recommend the newer version.

If you edit a lot of PDF files for work or personally, the Master PDF Editor is well worth the cost. There is an older free version of this without the watermark you might be a to find. I think one of the forum members provided a download link in another post.

Perhaps this link for v4 may help.
If the Deb file does not install, download the archive file and use it. For the qt5 version, make sure to install qt5-base and qt5-svg, which are required by Master PDF Editor.

Wps office suite

I also provided links that may help with your Wine issue.

Hope this helps...

Thank you for the links. I agree that Draw works somewhat. I haven't tried the WPS suite. I thought Scribus was the solution, but it is still designed, at most, to do chapters.

I'm trying the older version you offered a link to. Knock on wood! Thanks again!

I have an older version of Master pdf editor on my server. It's a binary file so you can drop it in /opt/ or wherever you'd like. Not sure where I can upload to so you can download

Also there is a deb on sourceforge
