hi
this sounds like a problem with the video driver.

open terminal [menu->terminal] and run

Code: Select all

lspci
This will list your hardware including your video card.

Post the output here, or at least tell us what it says your video card is.

I believe that model has an ATI Radeon Mobility video card.
Linux and ATI don't play very well together.

Incidentally what resolution are you running at?

cheers

hi again

The good news is everything is as it should be (so far).
Can you do this, go to

Menu->Control Center->Hardware->Hardware Drivers

and see exactly which driver is enabled(if any)
[It is possible to install proprietary ATI drivers].

Also here are some suggestions.

By default nautilus displays thumbnails for the contents of a folder,
with 600mb of pictures that is going to take some time to load up.
I recommend changing to compact view to speed things up.

Nautilus->Preferences->Views->Default View-Compact View

Open any folder and you're in Nautilus.
Incidentally it's normal for the screen to go darker while
the hard drive is thrashing around.

In a terminal enter this

Code: Select all

envyng -t
It will give you some choices including installing the proprietary ATI driver.
I have not used this personally so i cannot attest to how well it works.
With the right driver your system should be a lot faster.
Let me know how it turns out.

(Or you can install the GUI version through Synaptic (Menu->Package Manager)
and search for envyng-qt mark for installation and apply.)

Run envy again from recovery mode or the live cd and pick
uninstall and you will be back where you started.

Code: Select all

envyng -t
ATI and Linux...a match made in hell :cry:

cheers

If it truly is a graphics card problem.. may i suggest:
1) removing the driver installed by ENVY.. (u must remove it using ENVY as well)
2) http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
download appropriate driver using that site and install it using the information provided there. The new ATI drivers were releases few months ago and they do work better. Follow the installer instructions step by step.

BE SURE TO REMOVE THE DRIVER INSTALLED BY ENVY USING ENVY.. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY THAT DRIVER CAN BE REMOVED
good luck..

hi rippedcb

Useful information indeed, however his video card is not
on the list of supported devices, but I am sure this info
can help some other people.

A lot of these integrated video cards have very limited support.

Thank you for joining in the discussion, every new outlook helps.

peace

I know man, tell me about it.. i'm stuck with one of them.. but luckily my card is supported by the new drivers.

as for mobility m6 ly.. alot of ppl have got it to work decent with the fglrx driver..
also, some have got the it to work well under basic radeon 9000 drivers which can be downloaded from that website.

as for Envy-- i've heard alot of ppl who have had nothing but nightmares using it.. not just for installation, but deactivating as well.. i tend to stay away from it.

hopefully he can figure it out..
