Random Freezing Problem

Post by cultycha »

Hi everyone,

I registered to this forum because I have a very annoying problem and I hope maybe someone here can finally help me. I decided to change my OS from Windows to Linux about 6 months ago, but I keep having a bug that almost makes me want to switch back.

I am a very casual user and not very technical, so please be patient with me. Anyway, here it goes:

Problem

Every once in a while, my computer freezes. All icons on the screen disappear, I can't click anything and I also can't open the terminal. The only way to shut down my computer is to kill it through pressing the power button. This freezing happens at completely random times. Sometimes, there's also a very loud and unpleasant sound when I restart my computer (sounds like a very loud buzz), which goes away after some time.

What I Have Tried

Well. Since I have had the problem since 6 months, I have tried so many things. I basically tried anything I could find on the internet. Initially, I was on Ubuntu and I thought it had something to do with that, so I switched to Mint. I then tried to update my drivers and change my boot settings. Someone even said it could be that my SSD is a bit loose, so I opened up my newly purchased Laptop, took out the SSD and put it back. The latter SEEMED to help, because I haven't had a freeze for almost two weeks, but just now it happened again, and it's really frustrating!

My System

Not quite sure, what information would be useful here, but here's my system info:

I am more than happy to provide more information, if needed. I am so happy with Linux Mint, and I really don't wanna switch back to Windows, but this kind of thing really puts off people like me, who are just looking for a free and open-source alternative to Windows/Apple.

Anyway, any help would be much appreciated!

Just a simple suggestion which may or may not work (but I think there is a reasonable chance it will)...

Update Manager > View > Linux Kernels. switch to 5.8 as your currently using 5.4. NOTE: "linuxmint-20.1-cinnamon-64bit-edge.iso" comes with the 5.8 kernel by default.

if that fails, ill let more experienced users suggest other options.

p.s. but when your computer freezes I wonder if pressing CTRL+ALT+ESC would help since that's supposed to restart Cinnamon. or ALT+F2 and then press 'r' (without the ') and press ENTER and it will restart Cinnamon as I have to occasionally restart Cinnamon. but if your computer is truly frozen then obviously this won't work.

Thank you, I updated to 5.8. Unfortunately, there's not a good way to check if that worked except waiting... I will let you know if the problem occurs again! Thanks again! :)

Is there any common theme to the crashes? Are you streaming video/sound when it happens or does this occur after idling for a while?

There are many threads about LM freezing and I have suffered a few serious cases myself. The most recent one: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=342473 where you can check out the solution I found in the last post.

Another cause of freezing was large file copying, especially when Timeshift decided to do its thing. Try disabling Timeshift and see if that helps.

The latest E15 (Type 20RD, 20RE) Laptop (ThinkPad) BIOS/UEFI is version 1.15. Maybe that will help.

Quick update: I have tried all of your suggestions! The freezing situations has now become very rare and only happens around one or two times a month with which I can live.

A couple of things I can think of.

See if the freezing coincides with Timeshift doing its thing.

If you keep the System Monitor running you can see what amount of CPU and Memory resources each program is using. You can also run htop for this.

Please create a new thread for your issue because system hardware can be a factor in resolving this type of issue. Make sure to include the information in Section 5 of READ: How To Get Help! in the first post of that new thread.
