There is only 1 program which provides java
(/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java). Nothing to configure.
Linux mint 7 (gloria) 32bit main edition (Gnome desktop) default installation
Freemind from the package manager (synaptic), version 0.7 runs fine here
And if i run it from a terminal, I get

And that, of course also runs fine (it worked on the desktop already..)
--note that I am using Sun Java, since that is required/suggested for OpenOffice as well as other applications, and it is better to use the standard, than something else..
There is another mind-mapping program called VYM (View your mind), but the Ubuntu archive seems to be having trouble fetching at the moment
