Make an Intuos 5 touch PTH-450 tablet work with Linux Mint 20, Cinnamon 64-bit

So I am new at all of this. I need help for a real beginner.

The tablet and pen do work kind of when I plug it in. However, the express keys... not good! I have followed tutorials on YouTube, but they don't help. For instance when I set the first left button to 'on-screen help' and then test it with the gimp... I get a black screen with some tiny, tiny writing pushed way up the screen, half hidden from view. If someone could walk me through very slowly with what steps I need to take to get better results than this I would really appreciate it.

FYI the tablet plugs into my husband's Windows computer and works fine

It would be helpful for us to know more information about your install. What method did you use to install GIMP and what version are you using?

That sounds it might be working except the text is too small? Have you tried that button with other apps to see if maybe it is a problem just specific to GIMP or it is a problem with all apps?

Are you using the Graphics Table app or xsetwacom commands to map the xpress keys?

I did find there is a file for your tablet in the Mint install (/usr/share/libwacom/intuos5-touch-s.tablet) which is probably why it is working. I'm not sure exactly whether a new file is created and saved when you map the keys. Maybe someone else will know.

My dad gave me a Wacom tablet a number of years ago when he bought a bigger one. Just found out today (while investigating for you) the tablet has express keys. Never realied that is what those were. And obviously never used them.

While not related to the issue, your kernel is not the latest which is 5.4.0-70.

I used the Graphics Tablet app. The video I followed had 8 keys (I have 6), and the instructions didn't work so well.

I was also given this Intuos. In the beginning I didn't know about the express keys either, but on the Windows machine, when I found out about them, they were so cool.

What is xsetwacom?

It is a command line program to make changes with tablets. Only the Cinnamon desktop has the Graphics Tablet app. MATE and Xfce do not, so one must make changes using xsetwacom if using those desktops.

I did not even think to check the express keys on my Windows install. Will check later this week when I get that laptop out and see what I can discover. That laptop (with more memory and better cpu) has my GIMP install although I don't think I have help installed on it.

So... Forgot that I did install a driver for the Intuos, although the tablet worked pretty well already. But the way the express keys and the user menu were just so easy to use made me a bit envious.

I did a little research and the two express keys on the tablet I have are mainly to be used for navigation according to the documentation. I plugged my tablet into my offline Win7 laptop and found I must have installed the Bamboo software eons ago. I did not see a way to set a key to onscreen help on it, but I did see that option when I plugged the tablet into my Mint laptop

I found this video, Wacom on Linux Tutorial 3. Wacom Express Keys (Linux Mint 17 edition), (which may be the same one you used) and set both keys to "Show On-screen Help" to see what would happen.

I opened LibreOffice Draw and nothing happened when I clicked either button, but I don't even know what is supposed to happen. Any time I've clicked help in LibreOffice, a webpage opens in Firefox. So I now rhetorically ask, "What is on-screen help?"

I checked the ~/.xsession-errors file and found my express keys must map to 8 and 9 functionality for my tablet because I found the following errors repeatedly mentioned. This seems to be the reason nothing happened when I pressed the keys. I have not yet done troubleshooting to figure out the message.

You are actually getting something on the screen, so I do not know if anything is written to the file I just mentioned, but let's check to see if there is something recorded.

After pressing the express key to get the help and pressing some of the other express keys on you tablet, run the following in a terminal and copy and paste the results within code tags like you did for the inxi output.

My session only brings up errors, so if there are no errors, there may be no output.

A lot of those are repeats for each time the system polls the tablet. They look similar enough to what I have that I think I can experiment with my tablet to find answers which will help with yours.

You can click "Select All" for it to highlight the exact code I typed and then copy and paste it into a terminal.

I expect it will take me a few days to trace out what is happening. I did see some possible bug reports related to the Graphics Tablet app this morning (while looking for something else), but I do not know if they might apply in this situation.

I did some more searching and it seems to set up the table (buttons, etc) in GIMP one opens GIMP and goes to Edit > Input Settings. Your tablet will show up there and you can map the buttons, keys, etc. Check to make sure each option is enabled. You will want to make your selections using your stylus so GIMP knows that is what you want to map. If you use the mouse then pick up the stylus, GIMP will detect the input device has changed and you will probably not get what you want. So use the stylus to get the settings you want for the stylus, and the mouse for settings you want when you use the mouse.

I was not able to find anything specific about LibreOffice Draw with regards to using a tablet. I have also not yet figured out global settings (applying to all apps) with regards to the Express Keys.

Edited to add: Libre Office: does v. 6.2.3 have support for wacom stylus/tablet indicates the tablet and stylus can be used as an input device. There is no special support for it.

So I did try that with the keys, but somehow the problem remains the same, whatever I set for the accelerator keys. I just set the first key to ctrl+s, but when I push the first key I still get the black screen with the tiny writing. I checked on the documentation of gimp for more information and there seems to be hardly anything. From my hasty reading through various docs, I get the impression it's a problem they are trying to fix. I find whenever I try and go down a route like this, it takes ages, and right now all I want to do is draw, so I am just going to work with what I have, as in without the express keys. It is true, I haven't got to where I want, but I learned a lot along the way, so thank you for that. If you come up with a solution then I will be happy to hear it, but no pressure.
