No sound. please help

Post by Mihail »

I've downloaded Linux mint 20.1 as my second os (because I'm still new to it) and I have a big problem: the computer (laptop) doesn't produce any sound. The system says audio is on but it doesn't work. What do I need to do? :?: :?:

If anyone would be able to help, they'd likely need to know the details of your system. Please post the output of inxi -Fxxxrz, between "code" tags (it's the </> button on the post composer) so that it appears like this:
your output here
I'm curious...When you go to Sound settings ( via cinnamon menu search)...via the Output tab/button at the top of that window, I have a few questions.

1. Do you see more than one sound output option/device?
2. Under Device Settings under either of those options/devices..where it says " Output Profile" at the drop down menu option just to the right of that...what does it say?

Try changing number 2 first to something else and see if the volume is either muted or gets better at a reasonable volume. *** Just in case this does fix it and to prevent you from having sound or music literally blast your ears off..don't put your headphones on all the way ***

If that does nothing, try changing number 1 and experiment with those settings with number 2 again. Clicking the " Test Sound" and then each speaker button to see which one sounds the best.

I'm not sure if I understood you but,
when I go to PulseAudio output settings there is just one output option witch is "Dummy Output"
and in the "configuration" tab it says "off" next to the profile

if that's what you meant

I have a almost similar issue.
I havent learned how to set up the sound card.
I searched the board, the web and tried some solutions but it did not work until now.

but by running
inxi -Fxz i get this :

Code: Select all

Audio:
 Device-1: Intel vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: sof-audio-pci
 bus ID: 00:1f.3
 Sound Server: ALSA v: k5.4.0-70-generic
Anybody clues how to continue from here?

I'd suggest starting your own topic for your own problem. :)

I'd also suggest sharing the full details of your system. In your new topic, please post the output of inxi -Fxxxrz, between "code" tags (it's the </> button on the post composer) so that it appears like this:
your output here
Hello Mihail,

Let's get a look at your sound setup with this command:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
The last line of output will have a URL pointing to the info. Pasting that URL is all I need.

I can answer that:
It's better to open a new thread. As per the forum rules, which I'm going to assume you read, a new question deserves a new topic. :)

She's right, I'd add that unless you have the same hardware and OS setup it doesn't matter if it's a similar problem all that much. Start a new thread and post similar system info.

I'm not sure what operating system you're running now, but it isn't Linux Mint (I guess it's Ubuntu 20.10):

Code: Select all

!!Linux Distribution
!!------------------

ID_LIKE="ubuntu debian" UBUNTU_CODENAME=groovy
Are you trying to listen via HDMI audio? That's the only thing showing as available. To see why the built-in card isn't getting detected we should look at this output:

Code: Select all

sudo dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|sof|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel'
But you may need to first undo what you added to /etc/modprobe.d regarding these:

Code: Select all

snd_hda_intel: model=generic
snd_hda_intel: dmic_detect=0

You still haven't disabled the lines you added in /etc/modprobe.d, which you should do before trying this:

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/probe-fix.conf <<<'options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1'
Run that then reboot and test the sound.

Re: No sound. please help

You are not following the steps I'm asking you to do. You still have these active:

Code: Select all

snd_hda_intel: model=generic
snd_hda_intel: dmic_detect=0
You also have PipeWire running, which isn't implemented in Mint, so I have no experience with it.

You might have better luck on the Ubuntu forum.

To get back to where things stood before running that last command, you can undo it with this and a reboot:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/probe-fix.conf
Locked
