Cinnamon lets you switch "effects" on to look like the worst of Windows or off to work like older, more efficient, versions of windows. MATE has almost exactly the same resource usage as Cinnamon with effects off.

Internally, the difference is something like Gnome2 code in MATE and Gnome3 code in Cinnamon. Cinnamon can use GPUs for graphics acceleration, making Cinnamon faster than MATE on some computers.

If you are short on memory, less than 2 GB, use Xfce. For less than 256 GB of memory, do not use Chrome. :D

For 98.37% of the work I do, the difference between two applications is 384 times more important than the tiny differences between MATE and Cinnamon. :shock:
