[SOLVED] Hard Drived Keeps Disconnecting and

Post by WoToo »

I had a problem with a Hard Drive that I scavenged from a new external drive yesterday. I thought I fixed it once I formatted it to EXT4 and it seemed to run okay for archival purposes.

viewtopic.php?f=90&t=347200&sid=1fec191 ... 0e3a4e366c

But today it disappeared until I ran rescatux, a live boot CD in a safe boot mode. That distro never starts up fully, but it seems to fix whatever problem the disc is having. Idk if it's some GRUB issue or what, but it didn't show in GPARTED or DISKs again until I ran the utility distro.

Does anyone know what can be happening that the HDD just disappears? It also unmounted itself yesterday in middle of operations. It's brand new so I don't think it should be bad.

Idk what Rescatux is doing to keep fixing it or what LM is doing to break it, if anything, or if the Disk is just a flukey failure?

run a SMART test on it. Drive sounds sketchy.

It could also be the SATA port / cable being sketchy ...

The smart says it's okay. Some things say "Old Age" and "Pre-fail" on everything, but it literally says the same thing on all my hard disks, old or new, I have 6 of them in the case. This was the Quick 3m tests.

I disconnected another smaller harddrive that I had for 7 years and connected the cable to this one (basically moved the cable 3 inches), so it's using the same Cable. I mean it could be the cable but I never had a problem with the old drive?

pre-fail / old-age is just an indicator of what the test is "for". The only real thing that "might" be concerning is the read errors (but that could be a problem with the SATA port itself).

If I'm understanding you correctly, you previously had a drive in that port, and replaced it with this 14T gig?

Oh, I see about the Prefail/Old_Age, hah, always read that wrong.

And yes, I had a 6tb and swapped it out for the 16tb.

I think rescatux wasn't starting out because it was flipping out over some SATA controller thing. Could a larger drive suddenly cause that?

Otoh, while I haven't had a problem since 2016, this sabertooth z77 motherboard used to be a big PITA with random shutdowns back in 2014 for a couple years, at least with the Linuxes back then.

it's ID 5 that you are most interesting in - - the Reallocated Sector Count - -
& if that is okay .. then re-check your cables, as well.

Hey all, thanks to everyone that kept trying to help me.

I had a week where it worked OKAY and then suddenly I put in my next 16tb upgrade over another 8tb drive and the same thing happened to the exact same drive having problems (not this week's 16TB drive)!

After a while of digging around, trying RescaTux, playing with my BIOS settings, and such all without seeing this specific 16TB -- I'm pretty sure I found the problem and it's not the drive itself.

Turns out that from having so many drives crammed in there, long ago I added SATA power converters to some old MOLEX power connectors (my Power supply has a mix) and that's what's giving me a problem. As soon as I connected a free native SATA power supply, problem went away consistently.

The converters worked for years but this one must be loose somewhere. Strange thing is the disk always spinning to the touch, but I'm guessing it wasn't 100% connection or whatever.
