Why so many different input driver packages?

Post by SilentBlue »

Hello,

In the Release Notes for Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon are listed alternative input driver packages: libinput (main), synaptics (universe), evdev (universe).

I was wondering why there are different packages for input drivers.
- Is it not possible to pack all those input drivers in one package and then select the one that is the most compatible based upon the hardware?
- Are these input driver packages developed by different teams of developers with incompatible goals?
- Other reasons?

Thanks!
