Install mainline:
https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/20 ... inux-mint/
you don't need to download the kernel, mainline will do it for you.
Note - this is for mainline kernels, you don't get a version that has been customised by either ubuntu or mint. Proceed at your own risk.

Rather than tell what didn't happen...what did happen?
Anyway, to install e.g. 5.12, I used to go to
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ ->
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.12/
and install the FIVE packages (.deb files) for e.g. amd64 (it shows 7 .deb files, but two are either lowlatency or generic - pick one, not both).
...which is probably the hard way of doing what AndyMH described.

Re: How to install the latest 5.11 or 5.12 kernel ?
going to try but installed 5.12 and mint said is not supported so how check before download or install which is supported or no... is any methods ? Still having mint but want try this lowlatency 5.8 (I think ubuntu studio has 5.8 lowlatency). Installing 5.8lowLatencty in same way as installed 5.12 and also saying is not supported
Re: How to install the latest 5.11 or 5.12 kernel ?
Which kernels are supported or not can be seen from Update Manager/View/Linux Kernels. Mint 20.1 only supports 5.4 and 5.8 series.
Not to be rude, but I think that installing unsupported kernels like that kinda defeats the purpose of using Mint, it would be better to use Arch or Manjaro instead. Latest Manjaro (21) ships with 5.10 as default, and I'm sure it's possible to switch to 5.11 or 5.12.

Re: How to install the latest 5.11 or 5.12 kernel ?
Hi,
I've got hardware that needs a minimum 5.11.7 kernel for best performance.. I've got several other distros installed.. but I support Mint machines locally here and I'm not prepared to tolerate sub-par performance. That's just me though..
You can't install the full Ubuntu 5.12.0 packages or newer on Mint. The kernel headers have dependency problems.. require libc6 (>= 2.33).

The Canonical Kernel Team PPA has the 5.11.x by now:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... t.html#ID8
(item 8 )
Tried it, but am underwhelmed. Graphical performance on my AMD graphics was abysmal. Much worse than on the 5.8.x kernel.

Re: How to install the latest 5.11 or 5.12 kernel ?
Personally running from Ubuntu Mainline Kernel installer 5.11.16 . Working good with my nvidia card.
Re: How to install the latest 5.11 or 5.12 kernel ?
I can tell you what I did, but be aware that what I did is generally ill-advised as it breaks some dependencies. Also I use an Nvidia video card atm so keep that in mind. So having said all that, here's what I did....
I added the line:
deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu hirsute main universe
to the /etc/apt/sources.list file.
Then I ran an update and there were like 300+ things in the list.
Of which I ignored all of them except one. I only installed the glibc-2.33-0ubuntu5 package.
This was because kernel compilation always failed for me with the error libc6 >=2.33 required but libc6 2.31 installed.
Once the libc6 2.33 package was installed I re-ran Ubuntu Mainline Kernel Installer and this time the kernel compiled without any errors.
I rebooted, then I then went to Software Sources - Additional Repositories and unticked the Ubuntu hirsute PPA i had added earlier.

Maybe it's too soon to tell, because I only did this 20 minutes ago, but so far everything still appears to be working.
Edit: spoke too soon.

Re: How to install the latest 5.11 or 5.12 kernel ?
Hi, question. How permanent is the fact above? Like, will 5.12 be coming to Mint 20.1 during its life cycle, or is it not going beyond 5.8 because LTS reasons?
I'm only really interested in the PS5 controller driver in 5.12, it's working as a generic gamepad right now, the rest of my system is running fine so I'm not real worried about it, it would just be mildly convenient to have the touchpad work.
Re: How to install the latest 5.11 or 5.12 kernel ?
Mint v20.x = 5.4 LTS. the 5.8 kernel is only supported til Aug 2021.a.bowers wrote: ⤴Mon Jun 14, 2021 8:50 pm Like, will 5.12 be coming to Mint 20.1 during its life cycle, or is it not going beyond 5.8 because LTS reasons?

so in other words... there will be a newer kernel than 5.8 soon enough. but as to which one, I can't say.

Re: How to install the latest 5.11 or 5.12 kernel ?
I would advise against upgrading the kernel now.
The reason is that Mint 20.2 beta release is imminent (the blog says mid-June) and the full release should probably come in July.
So, you may find yourself in a situation where a Mint upgrade to 20.2 coming with an older kernel than 5.11 or 5.12 may be chaotic, specially with proprietary drivers.
I can't figure a better way to wreak havoc in your system.
I'd wait to see what kernel will be shipped with Mint 'Uma' and which one Edge ISO will include in the future.
But of course, it's not my computer, and everyone is the boss on his own...

I am using Mint 20.1. I received the kernel 5.10 change as a part of regular updates on about June 3. It works just fine. Check Synaptic and check items in this forum. 5.10 is released.

Not quite, which is indeed why you can't see it in the kernel tool of mintupdate. But you can get it anyway, when you install the "semi-official" OEM kernel:ThaCrip wrote: ⤴Tue Jun 15, 2021 12:26 pmI don't see anything in the usual 'Update Manager > View > Linux Kernels' section. so I assume what you say is nothing official yet?stevengarland wrote: ⤴Tue Jun 15, 2021 9:31 am 5.10 is released for Mint 20.1. I am in no rush as 5.8 works well on my system (i5-3550 CPU etc) as ill just wait it out til something newer is available with the more of the official method of installing kernels on Mint (i.e. Update Manager > View > Linux Kernels).Pjotr wrote: ⤴Thu Jun 17, 2021 12:33 pm Not quite, which is indeed why you can't see it in the kernel tool of mintupdate. Sensible decision. The kernel is the very core of your operating system; it makes no sense to mess with that unless you have a good reason.
