<SOLVED> Virtual Box problems with Kernel
Hi everybody,
I try to get a virtual machine going, hope I’ll be able to use Sketchup. I had a question regarding sketchup 2017 before (“Problems running Sketchup 2017”) and it became clear that I better run it on a separate windows computer.
I try to avoid buying a second computer and give the virtual box a go. Sketchup 2017 also doesn’t run there I read but I would be happy if I could make Sketchup 2016 work. That is apparently working on virtual box.
I downloaded virtual box from the software manager but I doesn’t run. This is what it says:
The virtual machine xxxx has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
MachineWrap
Interface:
IMachine {85632c68-b5bb-4316-a900-5eb28d3413df}
and:
Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)
The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver is either not loaded or not set up correctly. Please reinstall virtualbox-dkms package and load the kernel module by executing
'modprobe vboxdrv'
as root.
If your system has EFI Secure Boot enabled you may also need to sign the kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp, vboxpci) before you can load them. Please see your Linux system's documentation for more information.
where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) - The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT.
[/i]
I have uninstalled virtualbox-dkms and installed it again but it’s still not running. I guess I have to install the Kernel “rc=-1908” now. How do I do this?
Can somebody please help?
Thank you!

Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
I think that you will need to give a great deal more detail in order to get sensible help..
Firstly about how Mint sees your computer..
Run
in a terminal & then copy the output back here between the "code tags' (</> symbol above the reply box).
Secondly about how & from where you tried to install Virtual Box..
Also remember to download
Firstly about how Mint sees your computer..
Run
Code: Select all
inxi -Fxxxrz
Secondly about how & from where you tried to install Virtual Box..
from hereUbuntu 19.10 / 20.04 / 20.10 / 21.04
is the best way to go for new versions of Mint. It is a .deb download so is very easy to install..
Also remember to download
from here:VirtualBox 6.1.22 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
& run that in Mint after you have installed the VirtualBox .deb package..
Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
Or install it from a terminal (that way you get updates):
you will need to uninstall the version you have installed from software manager first.
Copy/paste each line one at the time into a terminal to execute.
If you are running LM19.x replace
Most of the time, the recommendation is to install software using software manager. VirtualBox is one of the exceptions, better to get the latest version direct from oracle.
Once you have it installed and running you need to install the extension pack (a download from oracle) and install guest-additions in windows. But more on that when you have it running.
Code: Select all
echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian focal contrib" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
apt update
apt install virtualbox-6.1
Copy/paste each line one at the time into a terminal to execute.
If you are running LM19.x replace
focal
with bionic

Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
Thanks AndyMH and RIH,
This is what comes up on the Terminal after the command “inxi....”:
Note regarding Kernel 5.8.0:
I installed Linux Mint 20 right after I bought the computer. I couldn’t adjust the brightness of the screen first so I googled the problem and found a simple to follow instruction on how to fix it and I installed the Kernel 5.8.0. That was successful, everything works just fine now.
I installed Virtual Box from the Software Manager and I have uninstalled it again.
I now have downloaded it from the Virtual Box website (Ubuntu 19.10 / 20.04 / 20.10 / 21.04) When I wanted to install it following message came up: “same version is already installed” although I uninstalled the version I have downloaded from the Software Manager. Nevertheless it’s installed now.
Note to AndyMH:
I tried to install it in the Terminal as recommended but it didn’t recognize / accept my password. (As I run Linux Mint 20 I didn’t replace “focal” with “bionic”)
I have downloaded the extension pack from Oracle. (https://download.virtualbox.org/virtual ... ox-extpack)
If I run Oracle VM Virtual Box the same message comes up as before when I installed it from the Software Manager only this time slightly different:
Is there something fundamentally wrong with my computer / setup?
Thanks for trying to help!

Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
Which probably means you have version 6.0. You must have 6.1.14 or later with a 5.8 kernel:I now have downloaded it from the Virtual Box website (Ubuntu 19.10 / 20.04 / 20.10 / 21.04) When I wanted to install it following message came up: “same version is already installed” although I uninstalled the version I have downloaded from the Software Manager. Nevertheless it’s installed now.
from here https://<blocked blogspam>/2020/09/06/virtual ... %20kernel.With the release of VirtualBox 6.1.14, Linux kernel 5.8 is supported in both guest and host modes,
Mint menu > admin > synaptic package manager, and search on virtualbox: Un-install anything virtualbox that has been installed (when you have made your selections you have to click the apply button up top) and then install VB from the deb file you downloaded.
I'm hoping that will fix the problem.
If it doesn't look here:

Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
If I open Virtual Box > help > about Virtual Box it says:
Version 6.1.22 r144080 (Qt5.12.
This would be "6.1.14 or later". Does it still make sense to uninstall and install it again?

Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
Uups...should have read you post to the end…
I did go to ostechnix.com and updated the whole system with the command “$ sudo apt upgrade”.
I tried to run VB again but unfortunately it don’t make a difference – still the same error messages coming up.
Restarted the computer but that also didn’t help.

Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
Look about the web this error seems to be primarily found on a Mac & has to do with default security settings there.
That leads me to ask if you have secure boot enabled or disabled in BIOS?
From what I have read, turning Secure Boot off should fix the issue.
If, for some reason, you are adamant that Secure Boot should be left on, then there is a far more complex solution involving getting the kernels signed.

Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
In Bios under Security is:
Boot Mode: UEF1
Secure Boot: enabled
Boot Priority Order:
1 ubuntu
If I try to go down from Boot Mode to Secure Boot it goes straight to Boot Priority Order, I can not select Secure Boot so that I could disable it.
I'm giving up and will look for different ways to run Sketchup.
Thank you a lot for trying to help me.
Cheers!

Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
Theresa, did you do what the error message says and run
sudo /sbin/vboxconfig
?Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
I think turning off secure boot will fix it.
But... as to other alternatives:
https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibili ... tchup-2017
crossover is the commercial version of wine* = not free (but you can try it for free). This suggests it should run under wine, which is free. Haven't checked compatability for the earlier versions of sketchup.
I use crossover because it takes all the pain out of installing windows software to run under wine. They also have tweaks to make sure the more popular win software installs and runs smoothly. You can still do it in wine, just more difficult.
* they are also a major contributor to the wine project

Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
How very nice – ok I keep on trying…
To AndyMH: I appreciate you suggestion, will try it if I can’t get Virtual Box going.
To spamegg: I put you command in the Terminal but this opens a new can of worms for me…thanks anyway.
To RIH : Thanks for the easy to follow instructions. I did follow them and it did do just what you thought it would; the secure boot is turned off now.
And it works! The VirtualBox starts up now.
In the next step a window comes up “Select start-up disc” and the text says “please select a virtual optical disc file….”.
Obviously I now need a virtual disc file. I had a quick look at the help file, it seems to be very detailed. I’m confident I’ll be able to work it out now. As soon as I find the time I’ll look into it.
Thank you all!

Re: Virtual Box problems with Kernel
I am glad Theresa.
The normal way to signify that a problem is solved is for the OP to go back to their original post & (using the pencil icon) alter the title of the topic to include the word Solved (in any case you like ) either at the start or the end of the original title. That way if another user has a similar issue & searches the Forum they can see immediately that the issue was solved & so might well be worth a read..

Thanks for that RIH.
BTW: This is a great Forum, thanks to all the helpful people - it makes Linux Mint a pleasant experience for newcomers. It's a very steep learning curve though... but well worth the effort.
