[SOLVED] Epson ET-2710 prints blank pages. Why?

Post by Martin1001 »

My laptop is connected via USB cable to an Epson ET-2710. It is recognised by System Settings, and I've set it as Default.

Using Skanlite, I can put photos on the Epson, and obtain digital images with no problem. I just converted several score.

But if I try to print from LibreOffice, or from XReader, I get a blank page (although once there was a string of the letter F down the left margin).

I was wondering whether I have a scanner driver installed, but not a printer driver. So I went to the Epson site, and at
https://www.epson.co.uk/support?product ... nd_manuals
I get, having entered ET-2710 and Linux, the message
"There are no drivers for your chosen operating system".

Is there a driver available in Software Manager? I've had a look, but nothing seemed to fit the bill, but that may just be my lack of knowledge.

Here is the driver link:
http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/searc ... archModule
You need the esc/p-r driver generic driver

all41, thank you. I get to the following:
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.7.10-1lsb3.2.i486.rpm 4.02 MB
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.7.10-1lsb3.2_i386.deb 4.47 MB

epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.7.10-1lsb3.2.src.rpm 4.25 MB
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.7.10-1lsb3.2.tar.gz 4.61 MB

[Notice]
In order to install these drivers, you need to install LSB package (version 3.2 or later) beforehand.

Ubuntu: # apt install lsb
Fedora: # yum install lsb
openSUSE: # yast --install lsb
Which of the six "epson-inkjet-printer-escpr" options do I choose?

And what about the [Notice]? It looks as if these are commands for the Terminal. Is it the Ubuntu version I need to type in?

RIH, thank you. I did all that, and expected it to work, but still blank pages.

Scanning still works perfectly (see original item to this thread), with connection (my only option) by USB cable.

But when I attempt to print, a page is drawn into the printer, goes in a bit, reverses briefly, reverses again and goes through the printer, but comes out blank. I've switched everything off, then tried again. Same result.

Without disconnecting the USB cable between my laptop and printer, I just had my son send a page from his Apple via Wi-Fi, and no problem, the page printed.

Any idea why I'm still getting blank pages?

I installed with printer connected via usb.
After loading the driver I had to go back through the Printers utility setup.
Mine is ET-2650, but uses the same driver.

How do fancy a change in direction, Martin1001 :)? Go to

https://github.com/alexpevzner/sane-airscan (Main page).

and then to

https://download.opensuse.org/repositor ... .04/amd64/ (Mint 19.3 packages).

Download and install ipp-usb, re-plug the device to USB and give what you get for

Code: Select all

systemctl list-units "ipp-usb*" | grep service

Code: Select all

avahi-browse -rt _ipp._tcp

Code: Select all

avahi-browse -rt _uscan._tcp

Code: Select all

driverless
ipp-usb is available and used in Mint 20.3.

(Do you not have a wireless capability on your computer?)

all41, I'm afraid 'After loading the driver I had to go back through the Printers utility setup' is meaningless to me, so I couldn't try out your suggestion. Is it possible to break this down into simple steps without taking up too much of your time?

brian_p, I clicked on and opened
ipp-usb_0.9.17-1+48.1_amd64.deb
and got the message
Error: Conflicts with the installed package 'ippusbxd'.

No, no wireless capability, hence the USB cable.

Switch printer off and disconnect form USB. Reverse after a minute. Install ipp-usb. It is a modern replacement for ippusbxd.

brian_p, I followed your instructions, and received the message 'Same version is already installed'.
'Reinstall package' was an option, so I did that, switched off, and tried to print.
This time a 'Not connected?' message flashed up, which hadn't happened before, and there was no paper movement in the printer.
The 'Not connected?' message is puzzling since Skanlite still works, so the USB connection is ok.
Any further ideas?

ipp-usb is not provided for your Mint 19.3, so you must have installed it at some time. Give

Code: Select all

dpkg -l ipp-usb

Hold on! ipp-usb and ippusbxd cannot exist together. You have (had) ippusbxd. Therefore ipp-usb cannont be there beforehand. I'm confused.

There's I'm sure a better way to find out, but I went into Software Manager and searched for 'ipp'.
ipp-usb is not mentioned.
Ippusbxd is not installed.
Cups-ipp-utils is installed.

Software Manager is fine. I haven't any reason to believe it is not reliable.
ipp-usb is not mentioned.
Therefore, it is installable. You will have downloaded it. Use Archive Manager?
Ippusbxd is not installed.
Ok. You have purged it.
Cups-ipp-utils is installed.
Not a package we have to concern ourselves with.

Archive Manager shows no files.

If I attempt to install
ipp-usb_0.9.17-1+48.1_amd64.deb
I receive "Same package is already installed".

Searching with Software Manager for ipp-usb brings up the (uninstalled) package Ippusbxd 1.32-2

I haven't any definitive answer for your experience.

Please give

Code: Select all

dpkg -L ipp-usb
and

Code: Select all

dpkg -l ipp-usb

kato181, I have got as far as extracting:

core [folder]
plugins [folder]
install.sh [text file]

The next step says:
Please run the script (install.sh) included in the downloaded package from terminal.
$ ./install.sh
but I'm obviously not understanding since I get:
martin@martin-Satellite-Pro-R50-B:~$ ./install.sh
bash: ./install.sh: No such file or directory
martin@martin-Satellite-Pro-R50-B:~$
Do I have to copy those extracted folders and file to the home directory, before running ./install.sh in the terminal?

Not sure if you have Cinnamon, & so Nemo, but if you do the easiest way
Go to where you have extracted the files & right mouse click & then click on Open in Terminal.
A terminal will open in the directory that you are in & then you can

Code: Select all

 ./install.sh

RIH, thank you, I created a TEMP folder, copied the files into there, continued as you said, and it installed.

I then went back to installing the second of

Tried to scan, and was now offered two options, the first below gave no activity, the second scanned perfectly as before
