Coreboot, Libreboot and Bios?

I'm new to this, but is coreboot or libreboot worth looking into?

I found out about this subject via the Purism site, apparently they're using coreboot on their laptops (https://puri.sm/projects/coreboot/).

I searched through the forums here but couldn't find much advice or insight beyond most Bios'es being closed source (Intel/AMD, etc), needing a compatible device, and the Libreboot project being only one person?

Is this worth it (easy?) to install one of these types of more "open" Bios's? Worth it? Easy to brick a system?
Just looking to learn a bit more about this subject. Thanks.

It appears that it is machine specific and only for that brand of machine. Stay away from it.

Not that I know of, but I do think one is sorely needed.

These people are working on open hardware architecture but they are quite far away from it for now. Like at least 15-20 years.
