Did things run any better for you on the 5.4 kernel?

My boot time came down a little.. I think I have way too many running processes, most of which I don't recognize.

That command is systemd-analyze blame.

A few things you can do

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl disable apt-daily-upgrade.service
and turn off anything that's not being used in Menu/Startup Applications, like Nvidia Prime or Flatpak.

Other than that, you have Intel integrated graphics and a spinning hard drive, so things are gonna be kinda slow. I'm not sure but the RAID might make things slower too.

You should try switching to the 5.4 kernel and see if it helps, also try XFCE instead of Cinnamon.

Also how much RAM do you have? Do you have swap? If swap is being used on a spinning drive it will slow things a lot.

Code: Select all

inxi -m
swapon -s
cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
Also let's take a look at the scheduling algorithm used for disk I/O:

Code: Select all

cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler
Other than that I'd say follow Easy Linux Tips Project:

Thank you.. writing it down this time... tried to run it just now and got this
Failed to get timestamp properties of unit network.target: Connection timed out

A few things you can do

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl disable apt-daily-upgrade.service
done
and turn off anything that's not being used in Menu/Startup Applications, like Nvidia Prime or Flatpak.
Got the ones I recognized turned off now.. there were 2.

I swapped to 5.4 kernel today.. and I XFCE? I do not know what that is...

Also how much RAM do you have? Do you have swap? If swap is being used on a spinning drive it will slow things a lot.

Code: Select all

inxi -m

Memory:
RAM: total: 7.47 GiB used: 1.79 GiB (24.0%)
Array-1: capacity: 32 GiB slots: 2 EC: None
Device-1: Bottom - Slot 1 (left) size: No Module Installed
  Device-2: Bottom - Slot 2 (right) size: 8 GiB speed: 3200 MT/s
Looks like I need more memory, I think

swapon -s
cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/swapfile file 2097148 0 -2

Also let's take a look at the scheduling algorithm used for disk I/O:

Code: Select all

cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler
mq-deadline] none

cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler

[mq-deadline] none

Any idea why ctrl V doesn't paste into the terminal?

Other than that I'd say follow Easy Linux Tips Project:

heading over to that link now.

Wow. Turning off some services can help, but each service is taking a really long time, e.g. udisks2 takes about 100 times as long to start as it does on my modest machine (580ms). I see that issue here sometimes, not sure there's a fix.

But --> Does your machine run normally after it boots?

Try looking through the output of for errors or anything suspicous:

Code: Select all

journalctl -b
and

Code: Select all

sudo dmesg | more
...hit CR or SPACE to page the output, of which there will be plenty...

Also

Code: Select all

top
to see if there's a CPU hog.

Edit: did it boot faster at first, and then get slower over three days, or after updates?

it does not.. everything hangs.. even typing here.

2700+.. yup.. plenty
I ran those.. not sure what to look for in the miles of results though..
Also

Code: Select all

to see if there's a CPU hog.

Palemoon seems to be a hog.. as do xorg and cinnamon

Edit: did it boot faster at first, and then get slower over three days, or after updates?
The first boot from the stick, before installation took a little longer than I thought it would but after installing.. that's when it slowed down.. even before the updates.
I am kinda scared of rebooting now

Try Ctrl-Shift-v.
You can change the shortcut keys to be Ctrl-v, Ctrl-c, etc under Edit-Preferences->Shortcuts if you want.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to unclog the machine?
Here is a list of copy and paste commands to enter into your terminal, one at a time that should tame your startups quite a bit...i have been doing this for years now and my system, using an SSD drive, cold boots in 5 to 7 seconds now...DAMIEN

REBOOT your computer to apply all commands and then retest your boot up times:

List of Items to Disable from Start-Up: just copy and paste commands one at a time into your terminal and follow the prompts that are given:

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl disable ModemManager.service

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl disable NetworkManager-wait-online.service

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl disable lvm2-monitor

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl stop avahi-daemon.service

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl disable avahi-daemon.service

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl mask avahi-daemon.service

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl mask plymouth-quit-wait.service

Disable Apt-Daily Timer Service: Your Update Manager Will Still Work:

Code: Select all

You can get rid of processes like bluetooth if you don't have any bluetooth peripherals, and avahi and cups if you don't need a printer (you can turn them on when you need to print, etc, I have a script for that in case you want it). But, these likely aren't your problem.

What is your internet connection speed and reliability like? Maybe that apt daily update service is trying to check online and your connection is very slow. Also, can you go into Software Sources (via the main Mint menu) and see what your Mirrors are for your Official Repositories? Verify they are servers that aren't that physically far away from you (ie. don't pick one from the other side of the wolrld). Also, make sure that "Source Code Repositories", "Debug Symbols", and "Unstable Packages (romeo)" are unchecked. Then check the tab "Additional Repositories" to make sure there aren't many in there. Shots in the dark, but might be worth looking at.

EDIT: I also noticed you have a RAID controller. Do you have a raid disk/array connected?

You should have made backups BEFORE doing these tweaks, In case you need to revert, not after, because these tweaks will not be applied nor backed up until the reboot happens...Your only backing up what exists before tweaks were made until that reboot...Also what are you using for back up that takes so long to do ???

Don't forget to do the cleanups once you reboot as well.

I don't think it would cause everything to slow down, but it might be worth checking your hard drive.

Go to Menu -> Accessories -> Disks

Since you only have 1 disk, it will automatically be selected.

On the right hand of the Title bar, click the three vertical dots.

Then click 'SMART Data & Self-Tests...'

At the top of the report, you want to see the 'Overall Assessment' say 'Disk is OK'

If it doesn't, the report listing the various SMART attributes should list which are OK and which aren't.

You don't want to change copy to "Ctrl+C" (without Shift) because that's already used to kill a running program.

the saga began with that reboot I was afraid to do..I clicked reboot and it refused to turn off.. tons of errors.. something about systemd journal failing to write.. ignoring .. read only files
So.. after a couple hours just waiting for that to stop, I finally pushed the button... let it rest and cool off.
and. many different obstacles later.. I'm at wipe drive and install fresh and it seems to be lingering at around a third of the status bar... maybe stuck? maybe not?

but I'm still able to be on line while installing??? mind blown. diggin the OS - even though it's trying my patience right now.

I've checked the hardware.. all things passed
I did the boot repair option
tried "something else".. for better partitions..more errors..
I tried the option to save data.. I didn't write down why that one failed
tried side by side installation.. another .."error occurred while writing the changes to the storage devices.. the resize operation has been aborted"..

That reboot also failed to turn off the computer.. over night.. still running.

so now I'm on the brute force start over installation... btw.. my backupd ata and programs usb, the system fails to mount and the extra allegedly bootable flash drive I made of - not mate.. not cinnamon.. the other one, didn't boot - went to grub?

so.. running from the stick.. lovely.. installing.. on creating the ext4 file system.. I'm just crossing fingers, eyes and toes that it works and it's just slow.. I guess there are floors that need mopping while I wait...

eta.. still stuck in the same spot almost 2 hours later.. no progress.. rebooting.. again... ~sigh~
Old broad looking for new OS tricks.. it could happen.
