Two monitors, the 2nd is unknown vga 1024x768 [SOLVED]

Post by Rah-Rah »

Hello.

Have 2 monitors Asus at 1920x1080 (detected by mint as Ancor Communications Inc 23" HDMI-0) and the second is a Phillips 200ws at 1024x768 (Uknown VGA-0)

How to make the Phillips 200ws use max resolution of 1680x1050 and the ASUS AT 1920X1080 (primary)

Thank you.

This sounds like it could be a graphics driver issue, but we would need more information to know if that is the issue.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers [code]Results[/code]. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Your data is showing one monitor attached which I presume is the ASUS.

Graphics: Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Oland PRO [Radeon R7 240/340] vendor: Gigabyte driver: radeon v: kernel
bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 1002:6613
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: ati,radeon unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: AMD OLAND (DRM 2.50.0 5.4.0-74-generic LLVM 12.0.0) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.1.2 - kisak-mesa PPA
direct render: Yes

How are you attaching the Phillips 200ws? Are both ends of the cable VGA attachments and securely attached?

Did you try installing the amd pro drivers? You would need to use kernel parameters for the amdgpu driver to install and can do that without downloading and installing the pro drivers.

Hello!

The Phillips 200ws is connected (VGA) and i can see the desktop at 1024x786, i can mirror with the Asus.

I did install the amdgpu-pro-20.10-1048554-ubuntu-18.04.tar with some errors, on a previous post the user zcot helped me and said to add the following lines

"To force a radeon setup use this: radeon.si_support=1 amdgpu.si_support=0
for amdgpu setup using this: radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1
"si_support" for southern islands, you turn one driver reference off and the other on."

viewtopic.php?f=90&t=350194

I managed to find a file were to insert, but when doing some updates the line was causing update failure.

When mint is booting a i get some errors for radeon, something about resume (-110)

I'll try to record with my phone and post here.

Thank you.

Were both monitors attached when you booted and ran the inxi command?

At this point, I'm assuming you can see both monitors in the Displays app since you are able to mirror them.

That would not be the correct version to install for LM20. That is the version to use with LM19 (which has Ubuntu 18.04 as its base).

It's my understanding the radeon drivers would automatically install from the kernel unless kernel parameters were passed to force amdgpu to install instead of radeon. I am not aware of needing to use kernel parameters for radeon to install.

In either case, you would not need to install any drivers from the AMD website. (You can later on if you have issues which those files might address, but they are not necessary to use amdgpu drivers.)

After adding those parameters to grub, you would also need to run sudo update-grub for them to take effect. Do you recall if you did that?

And did you try that before or after you installed the drivers from the AMD website? There may be some interference happening which is causing problems, so we would need to get an idea of what you did.

Hello!

I don't recall if it was active when i ran the inxi -Fxxxrz, did now.

Graphics: Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Oland PRO [Radeon R7 240/340] vendor: Gigabyte driver: radeon v: kernel

I can see the Philips from boot to the desktop.

I didn't know where to put the lines that zcot told me, but i found out where to put and i didn't ran "sudo update-grub", because i didn't knew that command...

After dinner i'l give it a go.

I got the drivers amdgpu-pro-20.10-1048554-ubuntu-18.04.tar from amd, for linux/ubuntu

Thank you.

To add those commands from zcot, open grub for editing with xed admin:///etc/default/grub
Change this line:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
To this:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1"
You then save the file.
Then update grub with sudo update-grub and all future boots of the computer will use those parameters.

I have also seen recommendations to use four parameters (instead of two) radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1, but give the first suggestion a try since I think zcot has more experience with that than I do.

Edited to correct second option which was missing the last digit.

Hello.

I tryed the first suggestion and seems to be working.

Graphics: Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Oland PRO [Radeon R7 240/340] vendor: Gigabyte driver: amdgpu v: kernel

The VGA is still unknown with 1024x768...

Last year i had Ubuntu and Intel onboard graphics card and i managed to modify xorg.conf and set it manually, but on mint i can't find the file.

It appears the amdgpu driver has installed. I had hoped the change might help pick up the monitor, but it seems that did not happen.

It's my understanding one creates an xorg.conf file rather than modifying an existing file. I do not know what might be needed for that.

However, you may just be able to create a new resolution and add it to your options. What is the output of xrandr --verbose?

Hello!

I haven't tryed the xrandr --verbose

I found older post (i think) about creating the conf file.

You have to shutdown the X server, do the login then make the file and test it.

My mint dosen't have a conf file and the "new" i don't have the knowledg to modify.

When i had the ubuntu i found a page that had one for the intel onboard graphics card and i managed to use the Philips 200ws at max resolution via VGA

Now i'm not at home, later an can post the conf from ubuntu for you to see

I also post the out from xrandr --verbose

Thank you.

There is no EDID value listed for the VGA connection which might be why it is not being recognized properly.

Perhaps information in this thread Lack of resolution available (solved) will help you get it working properly.

If it does not, I would guess you could create an xorg.conf file for your install. (I do not have experience doing this, so I stress that is a guess on my part.) I do not see anything in the one you posted which specifies a graphic driver, so you might be able to use the same type of file. However, your xrandr info indicates the connection is VGA0 for Mint, so you would want to use that in the xorg instead of VGA1.

As with any changes, I suggest making a Timeshift snapshot first. That way if you run into any issues, you can revert to the snapshot to return to your computer's present state.

Hello SMG.

It's done!

Have HDMI-A-0 at 1920x1080 and VGA-0 at 1680x1050.

At Philips i made the reset, the grub switched to radeon and made xorg.conf

xed admin:///etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.si_support=1 amdgpu.si_support=0"
sudo update-grub
sudo xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf

the content of my xorg.conf

Code: Select all
