Showing partitions by its humanly recognizable names

Post by Pepper-Mint-Patty »

In LM 20 we have given the 3 partitions of 1 hdd readibly names. In 'computer' they are shown but in the end of a weird name.
WDB1 shows like WDC WD40EZRZ-00GXCB0: WDB1

In Nemo 4.6.5 the name doesn't appear at all, only the unreadible:
Mounted at /mnt/b29ec158-7d8e-4883-9a1c-584841496cc7

Some hdd do show only their given name, it seems that are the one without partitions on it?!

Is it possible to have Nemo show only the given name like WDB1? So i guess you change the 'mounted' name visible in Disks. But how?

Found this topic that might give a solution. Unfortunately we don't understand it...

Select "Disks" from your menu, select the disk you want and press the cog (edit settings) icon just underneath the partition information. Select Mount Options, then click at the top to deselect the 'user session defaults' option, but leave the two highlighted options thevsame. Then select the 'identify as' tab at the bottom and select from the drop down list which identity you prefer. Press OK then press the 'play' button to the left of the cog (settings) icon which will mount your disk. Job done. Repeat as necessary for other disks.

If you mount them at boot by editing /etc/fstab you can give them whatever name you want!

Absolutely. More correct and elegant to do that, assuming the o.p. is confident in executing this procedure. My suggestion is a quick and dirty fix via the GUI, assuming the o.p. is not confident with the more 'proper' solution.

OK changing in Disk worked, but oNLY PAtH IN nEMO shows human name now.
Not in 'computer' where the label name still has the 'WDC WD40EZRZ-00GXCB0: WDB1' name.

In Disks still the machine HDD names appear, not my own names. No matter if it has 1 partition.
Only in VOLUMES window of DISK the owner meant names are shown.

Any way to alter that in the real label: WDB1?

Try this:
navigate to the partition (or directory) of interest and in the Nemo toolbar/Bookmarks make a bookmark to that location.
It will show in the left pane of Nemo and be humanly recognizable.

8) That

is a nice tip! Quick and permanent.

Thanks for the info but I don't use left panes with Nemo. Looking in 'GO' does show readable names, but is too cumbersome...
Just want a simple proper overview of my disks and partitions with human readable names, for god sake.

Download 'Gparted' from 'Menu>Software Manager'. Very easy to add/change names.

In gparted you just right click on a partition and 'label filesystem', add a label and it will then mount at /media/you/mylabel. What you are seeing is it using the UUID because there is no label.

This indeed is the only valid answer. Give the volume a label, and that label will be used instead of the UUID.

You can use Gparted to change the label, but Gparted may not be installed by default. You can also use Disk, which is available by default. Click your partition, then cog wheel, and select "Edit file system". You get a "Change Filesystem label", where you can set or change the label.
