[SOLVED] Mint loses sound card settings / does not see card after sleep.

Post by NewLinuxUser5000 »

Hey folks,

I'm sure there is a simple answer to this, but I've viewed other similar topics and the solutions don't always work for me or there is a nuance that I'm missing.

To get to the nitty-gritty, when I get my sound to work properly (through reboots, voodoo, and sheer blind luck) it last until I let the machine sleep at night or reboot, then all setting are lost and I have to start over again. I'm not even sure which of the things I'm doing is what is fixing it temporarily. I bought & installed a sound card, but on wake up / reboot it does not see the card. If I restart a few times, pulseaudio -k. go into alsamixer, etc , I can get it to work by flailing around in those settings for a bit. Is there an permanent fix to this ?

Here are my settings after a wake up when things do not work correctly:

Uh-oh, was this the wrong place to ask this question ? Should I be in a more technical thread ?

I'd suggest modprobe snd_usb_audio, but you got another USB audio device working properly... Did you try another USB ports/USB audio devices in the same port? Disconnect everything except sound card? Another kernel (e.g. low-latency)? How this sound card behaves on another system? Why can't it be hardware fault?

Re: Mint loses sound card settings / does not see card after sleep.

Post by NewLinuxUser5000 »

I tried disconnecting everything but the sound card , and it is the same. After a sleep, it forgets a sound card exists and only sees HDA NVidia. If I reboot, it will then see my PCI soundcard .

I was reading and maybe it is a timeout issue ? But I don't know why once fixed, it keeps reverting. Also, I don't understand why sometimes it takes two or three reboots to fix itself.

But once it works, everything is great ... until it sleeps and we start all over again.

Re: Mint loses sound card settings / does not see card after sleep.

Post by ThaCrip »

Like Servail said, it might be worth testing the problematic sound card (I assume your referring to a PCI slot sound card here?) on another computer if possible. maybe even try the newest Mint v20.2(?) (it comes with 5.4 kernel by default, but you can try 5.8/5.11 kernels on here to see if they are any better). but if it's a USB connected sound card that's acting up, just remove it from USB slot and re-insert it?

still, I do wonder if it's a potential hardware fault. especially if the sound card is really cheap. because while not a sound card, I had bad luck with those really cheap SATA controller cards that basically give you 2 more SATA ports as they work okay for a while but then start acting up etc (I have had two act up, and when both acted up, they react the same way where while I never had any data corruption from them, the system starts to semi-freeze up etc. currently I got another SATA controller card with 4 SATA ports (Marvell 9215 chip) and 'so far' it's okay as hopefully this one lasts many years). this may not be the case with your sound card (it's PCI, right?), but I think like Servail said, it's a possibility, which is why it would be a good idea to test that in another computer if possible just to see if it reacts similarly or not. hell, it might not be a bad idea just to see it on a Windows machine just to see how it fairs there as if it works on Windows, but not Linux, then it's probably some weird Linux glitch (or maybe some configuration tweak(?)) etc.

but if it's mainly when the computer resumes from sleep that causes the issue, I would probably just avoid putting it to sleep. so it's either fully on, or fully off, especially given your on a desktop. this would be a decent work around. I leave my main desktop on pretty much all of the time with no sleeping whatsoever as I either shut it down, reboot, or everything is always fully on. I never been a fan of sleep, especially on desktop computers.

p.s. I a couple of a cheap ($10-15 or so) USB sound cards with a 3.5mm output jack and both work fine on Mint. shows up as 'Unitek Y-247A'. I have not really tested this much on a resume from sleep type of state, like on a laptop, but I probably could easy enough if I needed to.

Yes, it is an internal PCIe.

I don't have a second PC to test it on, so I have ordered an external https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FP8PG9N?sm ... gToDp&th=1 USB to try. I read another old thread by Mr Een that says Xonar internals sometimes act up and that external USBs might give better results, so I will give that a shot.

Thank you both for trying to help.

Hi newlinuxuser5000,

For what it is worth: have exactly the same "problem" on my mint 19.1 Mate installed on old hp laptop with internal soundcard.

My workaround:

When sound = ok, open terminal and save the alsa state:

Code: Select all

 sudo alsactl store
After wake-up from sleep, open terminal and restore alsastate:

Code: Select all

 sudo alsactl restore
It should be possible to execute a script after wake-up. Package pm-utils. Have not tried this yet, use alias "snd" instead.

Okay, thanks for the help folks. I am marking this solved, although it is really more "side-stepped" than solved.

The external USB sound card hub I bought allows me do what I need and I'm removing the PCI card from my case entirely. Mint seems to like USB better than internal , so I'm not going to fight it.
