7x64 - changed ext3 to ext4 using tune2fs, seemed to go ok.
df -T shows ext4 partition however Gparted still shows ext3.
did the same on 7x32 laptop and they both show ext4
Is this a x64 problem with Gparted?

Re: ext3 to ext4
I don't recommend changing file system even if it can be done
You tell us nothing about your setup
There is a problem with an ext4 logical partition under an ext3 extended partition I know that for sure

And... If you are trying to run ext4 on less than a 2.6.30 kernel on a desktop without UPS, you are asking for trouble.

Husse,
Care to elaborate on this:
Sorry to the op if this is getting too far off topic. I'll move it if need be.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic on a spare 'blow-away' partition here just as a learning exercise; mainly to teach myself Grub2. When I installed though, I made a small ext2 boot partition + the ext4 / partition (shared swap) and installed Grub2 to the ext2 boot partition. This allows me to simply chainload to the grub2 from my primary Mint legacy_grub in the mbr. I can muck around with grub2 without affecting anything 'real'. Both the new drives are within an ext3 extended partition though, and I can't say I have seen any particular problems with that setup thus far. Is there a particular problem in this regard that you are aware of that I should be looking out for? There is a problem with an ext4 logical partition under an ext3 extended partition I know that for sure

Re: ext3 to ext4
Sorry - this is the backside of my job - I see and experience (this was experienced as well as seen) so much that I loose track of it after a while - it is described in the forum by me I think so you could search for it
I'm remembering a bit more now - got some serious problem(s) when I tried to install Gloria with ext4 in a logical partition under an ext3 extended - it failed miserably at some point

Re: ext3 to ext4
I'm afraid that I'm confused, how can a partition be described as "ext3"?
I have an extended partition in which I have a root and a home and a swap partition. Both the root and home partitions are described in GParted's file system column as "ext4", but the extended partition in which they reside is simply described as an "extended" in the file system column.
Is my extended partition an ext3 partition because when I originally created it I made ext3 partitions inside it?
BTW, I have been using ext4 for quite a few months without any problems...

nelamvr6 and others - sorry to confuse you
An extended partition not that is ext3, but hat has ext3 partitions in it - I have been rather unclear - sorry
No mix of ext3 and ext4 in an extended
