<SOLVED> Updatemanager not showing Firefox

Post by Member20170324 »

For more than a week now, I' m waiting for the Update Manager to show Firefox. Being a newbie, I only use the Update Manager to update the system.
I need the update, because (quoting Firefox site): "Some purchased video content may not play correctly due to a recent Widevine plugin update (bug 1705138). This is fixed in Firefox 88.0.1 and later releases." Current version in my system is 8.8. I considered removing Firefox using the Software Manager and then add it again, but is says 88.0+linuxmint1+sylvia. That won't help: 8.8, sylvia, my version is Cinnamon. Any ideas how I could solve this without interfering with the Update Manager would be most appreciated.

The current version of Firefox on Linux Mint is 89.0+linuxmint1. If you're on 88 and not seeing an update to 89 something is wrong with the repository mirror you've chosen, with your repository configuration (like you disable or deleted Linux Mint repository) or you blacklisted the Firefox package in Update Manager (so that it won't show you updates).

It's easiest to check on the terminal by running the command:
apt policy firefox

Does that show an available update to 89? Share the output here if in doubt.

Try selecting a different main mirror in Software Sources. Or if that doesn't help click the button at the bottom in Software Sources to reset to the default.

Hi, folks.

Here is another idea why no newer Firefox version than 88.0 is offered by Update Manager.
Look at the package name in a very concentrated way and try to remember who this sylvia was: 88.0+linuxmint1+sylvia
Hint: (Linux Mint 18.3)
The last Firefox version, which Update Manager offered to my LM 18.1 was named ... guess what ... firefox 88.0+linuxmint1+sylvia

Hi, Member20170324.

Please, execute the terminal command inxi -Sxxx and share the complete text output with us, which the command will display. Thanks.

Ah. Yes.

Member20170324 if you're still using Linux Mint 18.3 note that it reached end of life in April. You'll have to upgrade your Linux Mint to 19.x or 20.x to continue to receive security updates like for Firefox. Linux Mint 19.x are supported till April 2023. Linux Mint 20.x till April 2025.

Hi Karl,

Thank you.
sylivia:
I looked at the Update Manager, and, incidently, I saw an entry on when clicking Edit: Upgrade to 18.3 sylvia.
Apparently I will have to do that first, don't I?

Hello, Member20170324.

The command I had given had been inxi -Sxxx No space between - and Sxxx. Would displayed the same as the first section in your inxi -Fxz output.

Code: Select all

System: Host: ikoffeman-ESPRIMO-E3521 Kernel: 4.4.0-21-generic i686 (32 bit gcc: 5.3.1)
           Desktop: Cinnamon 3.0.7 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3.3)
           Distro: Linux Mint 18 Sarah
You are using Linux Mint 18 still. This reached the end of its supported life end of April 2021.
Firefox 88.0 was released in April and therefore Linux Mint 18 still received it.
Firefox 89.0 was released June 1st, i.e. after the end of the LM 18 supported lifetime.
Therefore Firefox 89.0 did not arrive on your system and never will.
Sorry.
But this is what end of supported lifetime means. No more updates, no more bugfixes, nor more security updates.

As xenopeek has already explained , it is time to upgrade to either LM 19.3 or LM 20.1.

Best regards,
Karl

Upgrading to another major release isn't generally recommended. A clean install is the recommended way to go. Make a backup of your /home before you start, either way.

This depends on
+ your preferred upgrade method, in-place upgrade or fresh installation
+ the intended target release, LM 19.3 or LM 20.1

The in-place upgrade path frequently seems to be the more attractive upgrade path, because it does not require installing from scratch.
But the in-place upgrade path brings along quite a few challenges, which may give headache to less experienced users.
And the in-place upgrade will in the end take more time than a fresh installation from scratch, because it involves so many separate steps.
Cf. here, please: Upgrade Instructions (for in-place upgrades)

Regards,
Karl

Hi Karl,

Following advice, I did not upgrade, but installed Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia, 32-bit, replacing the Mint version I used.
When trying to view the video content this operation was under taken for, the same error showed up. I then found out why: " Google Widevine ended support for 32-bit Linux on May 31, 2021. Only 64-bit Linux is supported."
To all who helped me in this matter: thank you very much.
