[SOLVED] Can you search for (text) pattern/content in the Linux Mint graphical interface?

Post by newtolinux21 »

Linux Mint (20.1) Cinnamon desktop.

After increasing dissatisfaction with the course of the big 2 operating systems, finally decided to try Linux, and decided on Mint. Am finding the command line strangely familiar, sort of a cross between mac "terminal" and distant childhood memories of a Sun OS terminal.

But the question is about the GUI. Seems to search only file names. And hovering over the magnifying glass pops up "Search documents and files by name".

Any way to search by content - sort of grep-like? (Yes, I'm a Linux Mint newbie.)

Thanks.

This won't help you now, but searching within the contents of the file is coming in the next release.

.
Search by content: that's where you might be interested in Recoll. You can easily find it with Synaptic Package Manager.

The Beta for 20.2 was just announced, you can get to the infos. Check that "Cinnamon" section: https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_uma_cinnamon_whatsnew.php

+1 for Vizi-grep! It's also in the Software Manager.
