Persistent freezing problem

Post by RaizenV2 »

Hello all, i'm a mediocre ish linux user , and for some time i switched to mint for a better support and easier workarounds(than pure debian ) but from time to time , sometimes at startup or after using chrome, or some random app, which may use a liitle bit of processing power ( I assume , it not be the case ) i'm confronted with freezes which dont allow me to even move the mouse , olnly ctrl+alt+f1 and from there to reboot , first i tried in looking over some gpu issues(nvidia ), where the problem could have been between the integrated and dedicated video card when switching for heavy tasks, so i used a small script to run before session start to put the powermizer from nvidia x server settings to maximum performance , and in addition i switched to previous version of a kernel ,
here is the script ( dont know if it helps but i will pass all the details i can get):

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
nvidia-settings -a [gpu:0]/GpuPowerMizerMode=1

Welcome to the forum, RaizenV2.

Linux Mint has three supported desktops, Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce. You are using KDE Plasma with its windows manager (which is not used by any of the supported Mint desktops), so that might be why you are experiencing issues.

System:
Kernel: 5.4.0-74-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 9.3.0
Desktop: KDE Plasma 5.18.5 tk: Qt 5.12.8 info: plank wm: kwin_x11

Did you check Xfce and MATE before or after adding KDE Plasma? I ask because other have had issues with underlying KDE processes running or files interfering when trying to run other desktops even after KDE was supposedly removed from the system.

You could try using the 5.8 kernel to see if that makes a difference. It is available in Update Manager. Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.8 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
