Ok looks like you are running an older kernel. Because your are running a older LM version, and because you have new piece of hardware you will need to update your kernel, that should help you.
Another quick way would be to d/l and create a bootable LM 20 or 20.1, run it and then see if the new printer works, by either installing the driver. If it works then you will know the older version of LM will not work with the printer, hence the suggestion of updating your kernel to the latest (5.4.0-77)

You might not believe this but it did not work either.

Same problem : Mint mate 20 recognizes the printer and then
when I order a testpage nothing happens !

And : in the comntrolpanel of the printer it says: IDLE which it is NOT !

Well that say's it there...Your printer is 18yrs old so the chances of getting that to work in any linux versions would be in my opinion near to impossible. Linux drivers for something that old were near to be not available.
Open source drivers were needed then, remembering that hardware manufacturers designed their printers for windows and apple only and rarely for linux.
You could try the following but I doubt if it will work.
sudo apt-get install hplip
sudo hp-setup -i

There is a number of striking aspects to this issue:

• The P1005 has been supported by HPLIP since version 2.8.2. It is hightly unlikely that it is not supported by HPLIP in Mint 19.

• It follows from the first point that obtaining HPLIP from upstream is not likely to be of benefit.

• Users who attempt to install upstream's package very often end up getting nowhere and digging a deeoer hole for themselves.

• It appears that a foo2zjs PPD is being used. It is doubtful whether this will work with the HP URI, hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P1005?serial=BC1FFSW.

• There doesn' seem to be any indication that a plugin was ever installed.

A possible way forward:

• Reinstall Mint's HPLIP and keep your fingers crossed that the attempt to use upstream's version has not broken anything.

• Install the HPLIP plugin as advised in an earlier post.

• Execute

  Code: Select all

  lpinfo -m | grep -i p1005

You want the PPD beginning with drv://hpcups and ending with ppd.

• Execute (substituting the data you have for URI and PPD)

  lpadmin -p p1005 -v URI -E -m PPD

• Disconnect and reconnect the printer to USB.

• Test printing with

  lp -d p1005 /etc/nsswitch.conf

What Brian said is right. You may want to try this though before installing hplip from the repository

and you may want to install hplip-gui also. There was no need to install hplip from outside the repository unless you have a very new printer and need a newer hplip than the one in the repository. In any event hope you get it sorted out.

it is still "rolling " but nothing happend !

I'm beginning to think that your install is so corrupted that you may want to backup all your important files and do a complete reinstall.
If you do that next time do not try to install hplip from outside the repositories. Hplip should be installed when you do the new install automatically.
If you want a nice gui hp set up tool install

sudo apt install hplip-gui

then look for hp toolbox under menu and preferences.
But the printer should be automatically added when you do the new install. Good luck.

what brian_p means is that by trying things your way and not listening to others advice is only making things harder for you to a point when you will crash your system and make it unworkable.
ke1di gave you a command to try in terminal, as yet you haven't done so because you haven't left a comment whether it worked or not. If you want help then listen and do what others suggest you try, some of them have more knowledge.
