Linux mint Laggin, browsing slow.

Post by Karvajalka »

Hello!

Not new user to mint, but also not computer or mint special person.

Problem is this, mint is showing some signs of lagging, internet browsing is slow even if speedtest shows download speed 25mb/s.
I have done all updates what have suggested, dont know anything about them.

Is there are some ways or codes for console how to check the life of this system and also to check is if this is hacked or malware or something.

Or maybe if there is something wrong, is it just easier to do fresh install. I dont have alot of files etc.

You might be pushing it running Cinnamon with a dual core cpu/integrated graphics.

However, its worth your while trying the tips on the following site (which was written by pjotr who is on these forums) to see if they help.
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... -mint.html
If they don't help, then try reinstalling Mint using Mate or xfce which are both a bit less demanding on the hardware.

Cinnamon might not be a good fit for your hardware. Also, what web browser?

This might be the culprit

Code: Select all

Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/oibaf-graphics-drivers-focal.list
  1: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/oibaf/graphics-drivers/ubuntu focal main
I'm guessing these drivers are not working well with your hardware. Probably best to stick with the kernel drivers that come by default. I could be wrong though.

Good catch, oibaf drivers aren't considered reliable.

The specs for this computer should work just fine with Cinnamon. I do not think that is the issue. As mentioned by spamegg, this issue may well be the oibaf-ppa. It would not be the first time it has caused issues on a computer with Intel graphics.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics vendor: Lenovo
driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:0416
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.9 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa
resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 4600 (HSW GT2)
v: 4.5 Mesa 21.2.0-devel (git-c9bc5e3 2021-06-23 focal-oibaf-ppa)
compat-v: 3.0 direct render: Yes

If you took a Timeshift snapshot before installing the ppa, then revert to the snapshot. That is the best way to clear that ppa from your system.

If you did not take a snapshot, the instructions on the Oibaf page indicate:
=== Revert to original drivers ===
To revert to standard Ubuntu drivers type the following in a prompt shell:
$ sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers

It's my understanding that will stop future updates. I am not sure if it removes already installed drivers when using Intel. I believe it did for one other person I helped as that person's graphics began working properly again.
