catweazel posted a fix a few hours ago it fixed my sound problems so far..

sudo nano -w /etc/pulse/default.pa

Look for a line that reads load-module module-udev-detect.
Modify the line by adding a space plus tsched=0 so that the line looks like this:
load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
Ctrl-O to save then ctrl-x to exit

Then restart Pulseaudio..
pulseaudio -k
pulseaudio --start

thnx kato181, we decided to do a new install. (Which sadly isn't going too well)

Bummer..I had LM20 running on here sound was perfect, then "bang".... updates happened and now I suddenly have crackling and scratchy sound on my music. So I thought ok, new speakers will fix that problem, they did 4 about 5 songs then the the crackling and distortion re-appeared so it wasn't with the speakers.
I'm sure it was an update that has borked the sound.

Catweazeal put up a post that appears to fix the sound, it seems to be working good so far.
Do the following...
Open terminal and ..
sudu su
enter password
then enter the following command..
sudo nano /etc/pulse/default.pa
look for the following line..
load-module module-udev-detect
Then add the following text after so it reads..
load-module module-udev-detect tdched=0

Then save ctrl-O and exit crtl-x
Then run the following...Restarting pulseaudio

pulseaudio -k

pulseaudio --start
