Just getting to grips with the mounting process on LM. I understand how to mount drives and how to automount and how to change where they are mounted to.
For arguements sake, lets say I have a drive mounted at media/username/
When using any software that requires me to define a save path to this drive, is there any way I can quickly see this mounted drive rather than having to navigate to the specified folder above in the same way Files lists mounted devices under "Devices"?
I'm just looking for a quick way to find specific mounted drives no matter what software is requiring me to browse/use that drive for.
Thank you!
Mounted Drives - shortcut to the save path?

Re: Mounted Drives - shortcut to the save path?
It'll be more like
/media/username/some-disk-id
; you probably shouldn't add /media/username/
to your fstab as a mount point. (also, there's a leading "/": /media/username
isn't the same as media/username
)You're probably thinking about links; if you doI'm just looking for a quick way to find specific mounted drives no matter what software is requiring me to browse/use that drive for.
Code: Select all
ln -s /media/username/some-disk-id $HOME/mydisk
Code: Select all
cd ~/mydisk
mydisk
link. some-disk-id
could be the partition (it's not really a 'disk') label or ugly UUID, or something you made up.Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Re: Mounted Drives - shortcut to the save path?
Thank you very much. Sorry, that was a typo on my part when I missed out the leading "/", quite right.
I'm slightly confused and trying to explain my confusion is also a bit tricky! For example, if I use Libreoffice to save a file, the save as files browser looks quite similar to the Files browser itself in terms of I can quickly see all my mounted drives/partitions and access any folders on them in order to save a file there (they are all under "other locations").
However when using other software such as QBittorrent and I'm trying to set a save location for files downloaded through it, I do not see the same browser it seems as I would in Libreoffice for example. For a start, there is no "other locations" in there. I have to manually navigate to the mount point directory and find the folder there. I can see using Links will somewhat be the answer to this. But I was hoping to literally be able to have specific Links (anything I can click on) in the sidebar of any save as/save to files browser. Is that possible?
I have been looking at a lot of tutorials regarding the Linux files system and I can see I've been looking at things a bit backwards since coming from Windows. So I'm hoping it'll all start to click soon!

Re: Mounted Drives - shortcut to the save path?
Unlike Windows, which is built by a paid team of developers using a common set of tools, Linux relies on unpaid individual developers, each coding apps their own way. Each of them chooses how they want to handle saving files. I know that seems chaotic but that's one of the beautiful things about Linux, CHOICE. If you don't like the way one program works, you can install a different one. You're not tied down to one way of accomplishing a task.
It takes a while, coming from Windows, to get used to having a choice. Don't give up. It may take some time to find the set of tools that works best for you but in the end, you'll be glad you stuck to your decision to try Linux.

Re: Mounted Drives - shortcut to the save path?
Thank you. So if I'm right in what I understand so far, in the case of QBittorrent at least, when I use their save file to feature to select where I want to save files to, the fact I see a browser with a sidebar displaying "Computer" and underneath "myusername" is just the way QBittorrent has been developed on Linux? It could not show more than those two items in the side bar if I made a change somewhere else on the Linux file system or created a link somewhere?Larry78723 wrote: ⤴Tue Jul 27, 2021 9:50 am Unlike Windows, which is built by a paid team of developers using a common set of tools, Linux relies on unpaid individual developers, each coding apps their own way. I'll be sticking with Linux, no doubt. There are so many things I like about it and most other things can be learnt it seems
Re: Mounted Drives - shortcut to the save path?
I discovered the bookmark feature earlier today, but unfortunately whilst it was easily accessible in the Files browser, it wasn't appearing anywhere obvious in save as/save to features in other applications*. Unless I have misunderstood something which is quite possible!deepakdeshp wrote: ⤴Tue Jul 27, 2021 9:56 am You can set a book mark in nemo the Cinnamon file manager.
*EDIT - with the exception to Libreoffice applications.
