My video drivers are FUBAR

Post by KFGeronimo »

So I have no idea how to start this or even what to say. I know this issue is more on Nvidia's side but I hope you guys can help.

So I just installed Mint 20.2 Cinnamon on my side rig (i5-7600k, GTX1060) and I can't get the Nvidia drivers to work at all. Whenever I use them my computer no longer recognizes my TV and I'm stuck in 786p (4:3 ratio). Originally nothing I did had any effect until I updated the Kernal to the most recent one. Now I'm in 4:3 until I go to Display Settings and then all of a sudden they seem to kick on. Still doesn't recognize my TV though and I'd really like to figure out how to make this stuff just work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have tried the 470 and 460 drivers. The open source drivers work but Steam Proton doesn't like those. Since the open drivers work I doubt it's a hardware issue.

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know how to diagnose this issue, but there are some people here who know how to get to the bottom of graphics issues.

In the meantime however, I did have something similar happen to me recently when I installed a second version of Mint. My primary system uses the 5.8 kernel branch and the v460 nvidia driver. When I installed the second system, I naturally went for the latest nvidia driver and got a low resolution desktop and the 'displays' application didn't detect my monitors. I went back to the nouveau driver and all was well, tried nvidia v460 again and it didn't work. I then rebooted to switch systems, and rebooted again into the new installation. At that point, it started working.

Even now, sometimes I can boot into the new system and get the low-resolution desktop. So I reboot, and so far, it has always come back to full resolution. So far, I've not had the time to get into why it does this as rebooting is a quick fix for me :)

EDIT: I just removed the post info here since it seems SpookyWatcher's info below I suspect is better.

Without some technical information, we can’t help you. Please post an inxi -Fxxxzr report. This will give us a concise overview of your hardware and how Mint sees it.

Here is how to generate the report and post it:
Open a terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-t). Make it fullscreen to avoid unneeded linebreaks or chopped lines. Execute the command

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxzr
exactly as it has been typed here.

Mark the complete text output which the command will display with your mouse.
Press the keyboard shortcut <Shift><Ctrl>C to copy the marked text into the clipboard.
Enclose the results between the code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply then paste <Ctrl>V them in your reply between the code markers
Results
.

The results will help us to help you.

If you have found the solution to your initial post, please open your original post, click on the pencil, and add (Solved) to the Subject, it helps other users looking for help, and keeps the forum clean.

If you have nvidia drivers installed from driver manager...
Quick easy fast check I just learned. After logging in and at the desktop. Hit CTL + ALT + BKSPC

That will restart x and log you out. Log back in and see if your nvidia drivers "woke" up. Your system looks a lot like mine (6700k @ 4.9 and 1080 ti) and apparently my system was booting too fast and nvidia wasn't loading early enough. See my thread here and hopefully it helps: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=350507&p=2024327#p2024327

SMG's test and solution was perfect. Hope it helps. And if the quick test does not yield positive results, please do what Larry78723 has asked.

Cheers

Sorry for not coming back sooner work has been wrecking me.

So it seems like my drivers work all of a sudden. I have no idea what I did, but it works now 'mostly'. The only driver issue I have right now is that whenever I open up the Display menu my screen goes off for a second like it's changing resolution. Any idea how to fix that?

I uploaded my system info in case you guys notice anything wrong. I'm having some other issues but that will be for another time.

Thank you to everyone for their comments.
