How to change the folders listed under "My Computer"?

Post by Liebniz »

How do I return "Pictures" to list of folders under "My Computer?"
Details:
Clicking on the folder icon opens the list "My Computer," "Bookmarks," "Devices," and "Network.
A few days ago "Pictures" disappeard from the folders listed under "My Computer."
The folder list now includes only Home, Desktop, Documents, Music, Videos, Downloads, File System, and Trash.
Several hours of internet searching did not find a way to change the folder list under "My Computer," or return "Pictures" back to the list.
I tried to find a combination of 3 words to use in the Linux Mint Forum search that would find posts related to my problem. No combination produced anything useful.
1) How do I return the "Pictures" folder to the list under "My Computer?"
2) Where can I read about making changes to the list that appears after clicking on the folder icon?
I would greatly appreciate anyone's help.

Most likely your Pictures folder has been accidentally moved to another directory.
Run the search tool to find 'Pictures' folder
How do I return "Pictures" to list of folders under "My Computer?"
This depends on your desktop environment (Cinnamon MATE xfce)
btw if you include your system info per forum rules:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=83444
especially #5 you will get better replies.

Open terminal and run this command :

Code: Select all

find . -type d -iname "Pictures"
If a type -d (directory) file named Pictures (-iname=case insensitive, will also find pictures or PICTURES or PicTureS...) exists, the location will be displayed and you may move it where it belongs.

The Pictures folder is where it has always been, at /home/{user name}/Pictures. I never lost the Pictures folder.
/
Below is a screen print of the problem.
PicturesSuddenlyMissingFromPlacesList.jpg
The left side column has: Home, Desktop, Documents, Music, Downloads, File System, Trash.
"Pictures" used to be in that list.
I can still get to the Pictures folder from "My Computer" and by clicking on "Pictures" in the Name list.
/
BUT WHY did Pictures disappear from the left column? What did I do?
HOW can I get Pictures back in the left column list?
What controls the folders that appear in the left column list?
/
If I find the answers then I will post them here.
(Posting here is a useless task because the answer will be hidden among the thousands of posts about the wrong things found by searching on the correct 3 word combination. But answering the questions will make me feel better.)
Thanks all.

Please don't be quite so damn negative, the two posters above me ARE trying to help you, AND the answer will be more than a "3 word combination".

First you somehow deleted a bookmark, but it is no problem to put it back.

1) In Nemo, your file manager (it looks like anyway, so posting the info all41 asked for would help BTW), double click your pictures folder (right side).
2) Then click "Bookmarks" up top in the file menu, then click "add bookmark".
3) The bookmark will appear in your left column, but, lower than where it was...
4) Again click the Bookmarks menu item, this time click edit bookmarks, then on the left you can drag your Pictures folder up to where it belongs.
5) Done

I added an Emulation folder here for demo purposes.

Let the computer do the searching for you. Click on "Quick links" near the top left of any page, then select "Your posts" and you will see all 11 of your posts.

It is not my posts that I search for.
The problem is searching for answers and solutions.

I tried various combinations of 3 words to find information about the problem I described in my first post in this thread.
The searches showed many posts about things unrealated to what I wanted to find.

With Nemo you should be able to grab the Pictures folder in the right pane and drag it
into the correct location in the left panel--that re-creates the shortcut only and doesn't actually
move or relocate anything. (it also creates the correct icon)

Thank you very much.
> A) With Nemo File Manger open, do NOT LEFT click on the "Pictures" folder under the "Name column. INSTEAD DOUBLE CLICK, and the "Pictures" folder will open under the "Name" column. Nothing else appears to have happened.
BUT the double click has primed the "Add Bookmark" option under the top horizontal "Bookmarks" tab.
A click on "Add Bookmark" will make the previously double clicked folder (Pictures) appear in the left column list under "Bookmarks."
Next Left click on the "Pictures" folder under "Bookmarks" and drag it from Bookmarks to the list of folders under "My Computer."
It works and I am grateful for the instructions.
/
> B) Another way is to left click on "Pictures" folder under the "Name" column.
Drag the "Pictures" folder from the name column to the list under "My Computer."
In this situation the "Pictures" folder is NOT MOVED from one place to another by dragging. Instead a link to it is added under "My Computer." After draggin to a new location the orginal "Pictures" folder remains in its orginal location.
It works and I am grateful for the instructions.

"nemo" is a popular name.
Searching the internet for a guide or user manul for nemo found the following:
/
nemo, the Cinnamon File Manager, Linux Command Library
Command line only. Nothing about the graphical user interface.
https://linuxcommandlibrary.com/man/nemo
/
Nemo User Guide: A Tool to analyze genes and chromosome territories...
https://academic.oup.com/bioinformatics ... 696/212832
/
Nemo Users and Programmers Guide. NEMO is a Stellar Dynamics Toolbox ...
http://carma.astro.umd.edu/nemo/manual/nemo.html
/
Owners Manual - Nemo Arms
https://nemoarms.com/owners-manual/
/
Operating and Maintenance Instructions NEMO -Pump
https://www.egm-llc.com/pdfs/iomanuals/ ... manual.pdf
/
Nemo Gateway - User Manual - 2018 October
A bridge between the NMEA 0183, NMEA 0183-HS, NMEA 2000 marine electronic device network communication standards and your shipboard Ethernet-compatible navigation systems and devices.
https://www.rosepoint.com/nemo-gateway/ ... Manual.pdf
/
It appears to me no written instructions exist for nemo under the Cinnamon graphical user interface.
It appears the only way to learn it is instruction from another human.
/
I am very gratefull for these instructions.

Seems like you have a handle on this now so kudos.
Making a point though--if you had included information as suggested in the forum guidlines you could have had a more immediate answer

Everyone should review these from time to time.

Thanks for the explainations.
The %5Dhttp://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopi ... 17&t=83444
link is dead (Not Found).
/
I went back to the list of Forums,
index.php?sid=b8a0e3c38804ab05de880e15c62c6e69
the first item under "IMPORTANT NOTICES" is a link to "Rules & Notices."
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=83314
/
I had jumped to the concuslion it had the usual Rules and Notices (such as be polite, do nothing illegal, etc.)
Rules & Notices is 1,577 pages.
Under "Section II - Technical Guidelines," item "[5] Details! Details! Details!"
is the list of information to include when asking a question:
/
" Include the version and architecture (32-bit, 64-bit) of Linux Mint. "
" List any relevant hardware or software specifications. 'inxi' is a useful terminal command for listing this. Use inxi -h for help. Generally it suffices to type the following in terminal and include the output in your post -> inxi -Fxxxrz "
" List what Display Environment you are using if relevant (GNOME, KDE, XFCE, LXDE, etc). "
" If you have output errors, list them in their entirety. "
and a little more.
Now I know and I will do better next time.

I tried various combinations of 3 words to find information about the problem I described in my first post in this thread.
The searches showed many posts about things unrealated to what I wanted to find.
Sometimes placing quotes around the words makes a difference. Sometimes placing a + and then quotes around the words makes a difference. Or search on Duck Duck Go:

Sometimes it is difficult to find a few words to use in an internet search.
I found "nemo" from Help > About = Nemo 4.0.6.
Does nemo's left column list of folders have a name?
Any duckduckgo.com ( or google.com) search that included "nemo" produced links to things also named "nemo."
Adding Linuxmint or Linux mint, cinnamon, cinnamon desktop, and so on, added more links about the wrong things.
I did find command line commands for nemo, but nothing about the graphical user interface version.
I cannot find documentation for the Linuxmint Cinnamon desktop graphical user interface version of nemo.
The only way to learn how it works is to experiment,
and/or find someone to explain it,
who learned by listening to someone else who knew it.
/
I am grateful for the geneous help here.
I just want people to know it is difficult to use undocumented software, and hope for the kindness of a stranger's help.
