[Solved] Updates stopped 19.1 Tessa Xfce 64-bit?

Post by oldporridge »

I recently stopped receiving any updates, and suspect that this version of Mint is no longer supported? Where can I find out whether this is correct please?

Assuming that this is the case, it means that I will need to install a new version - but which? And is there a guide on how to do this please?

I'm an OAP and very out of my depth....

thanks

The 19.x series of Linux Mint is supported until April 2023. Updates should still be available fairly regularly - - I just installed several myself this morning.

It sounds as though there *may* be some issue with your software manager if you're not getting updates? What happens if you go into a terminal & run sudo apt update?

Thanks for responding.
It offered me a series of updates, which in turn I've accepted.

I don't appear to have an updates icon at the bottom right corner of my screen like I used to do - how do I restore this please?

You should be able to launch "Update Manager" from your menu. Either search for it, or just start typing "update manager" (without the quotes) after pressing the icon - - it should come up.

Once it's up, click on EDIT-->PREFERENCES. Then click the OPTIONS tab. You should see a couple of sliders that will control when the Update Manager icon appears or is hidden in your panel.

I cannot launch Update Manager - clicking on the icon generates nothing at all.

Any suggestions please?

Hello, oldporridge.

In this case, please, open a terminal window. Type mintupdate and press the enter key.
Does Update Manager start?
Are any lines of text displayed below the command mintupdate? In case there are any messages, please, mark them with your mouse and paste them into your next reply.
In case Update Manager did not start, then maybe those messages will give us a hint why it did not start up.

Regards,
Karl

Karl, this error message came up:

Hello, oldporridge.

I suggest to try re-installing mintupdate from the commandline.

In order to do so, please, open a terminal window.
Then execute the commandline sudo apt update first.

Provided this command succeeds, please, execute the commandline sudo apt install --reinstall mintupdate
Please, share the output, which this command displays in the terminal window, with us.

Provided the second command succeeds as well, you could try mintupdate again. Does Update Manager open now?

Regards,
Karl

Reason: typing error, missing "s" in "install" corrected.Yields: sudo apt install --reinstall mintupdate

@karlchen - That command should be sudo apt install --reinstall mintupdate

Karl
I've entered the two commands as suggested, and this is the latter part of what appeared on screen:

Code: Select all

.........111 packages can be upgraded. Run 'apt list --upgradable' to see them.
W: An error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: https://repo.skype.com/deb stable InRelease: The following signatures were invalid: EXPKEYSIG 1F3045A5DF7587C3 Skype Linux Client Repository <se-um@microsoft.com>
W: Failed to fetch https://repo.skype.com/deb/dists/stable/InRelease The following signatures were invalid: EXPKEYSIG 1F3045A5DF7587C3 Skype Linux Client Repository <se-um@microsoft.com>
W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Code: Select all

jim@jim-ThinkPad-Edge-E531:~$ sudo apt install --reinstall mintupdate
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt --fix-broken install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
 libhogweed4 : Depends: libnettle6 (= 3.4.1-0ubuntu0.18.04.1) but 3.4-1ubuntu0.1 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
jim@jim-ThinkPad-Edge-E531:~$
Update manager still doesn't work, and the updates icon is still missing.

I then tried entering the following command as suggested: 'apt --fix-broken install' and received a long list of commands, but the situation remains unchanged.

Try this for the Skype error:

Code: Select all

 curl https://repo.skype.com/data/SKYPE-GPG-KEY | sudo apt-key add -
For the other, try:

Code: Select all

 sudo apt-get --fix-broken install
Or:

Code: Select all

 sudo apt-get -f install

Thanks.

(a) Your suggestion for Skype generated this:

jim@jim-ThinkPad-Edge-E531:~$ curl https://repo.skype.com/data/SKYPE-GPG-KEY | sudo apt-key add -

(b) Your second suggestion:

jim@jim-ThinkPad-Edge-E531:~$ sudo apt-get --fix-broken install

I'm not sure where this leaves me, for here's still no Updates Icon in the bottom right hand corner of my screen like there used to be.

I'm not sure either, but do as it said:

Code: Select all

 sudo apt autoremove
Then see if you can open Update Manager.

<side note>
The list of obsolete kernel packages, which simply cry out all day long "Release us. Executing 'sudo apt autormove'!", is impressive.
Such lists of obsolete kernel packages are the reason or at least one reason, why in recent Linux Mint releases, Update Manager is able of uninstalling obsolete kernel packages automatically, provided the user has willingly enabled the relevant setting.

Looks like progress - the Update Manager icon is back and functioning. So many thanks for that!

The obsolete kernel packages have been uninstalled - how do I set Update Manager up to do this automatically please?

Hello, oldporridge.

Provided that Update Manager on your Mint 19.1 has got the same features as Update Manager on my Mint 19.2,
then inside Update Manager click on the menu "Edit" => "Preferences". Next click on the tab "Automation".

Inside the Automation tab there is "Automatic Maintenance". Here you can enable "Remove obsolete kernels and dependencies".

Addendum:
Found out that actually the "Automatic Maintenance" has been introduced in Mint 19.2. Not quite sure whether it has been ported back to Mint 19.1 and 19.
Cf. New features in Linux Mint 19.2 - Section 'Update Manager'

Thanks Karl.
You are correct - this feature is not available on Mint 19.1

Thanks to everyone else who assisted. I'll just have to remember to periodically remove these obsolete kernels manually, now you have shown me how.

Orr, maybe you can upgrade to 19.2 in Update Manager, Edit tab?
Correction: Make that 19.3.

Hi, sleeper12.

Update Manager will only offer upgrading to Linux Mint 19.3, since LM 19.3 had become available. There will be no option to upgrade LM 19.1 to LM 19.2 instead.
The only way of upgrading from LM 19.1 to LM 19.2 would be a way, which is not officially supported:
  • Replacing the nickname tessa by tina in the sources list file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
  • Executing sudo apt-get update
  • Executing sudo apt-get upgrade
As LM 19.1 and LM 19.2 share the same Ubuntu base, 18.04, this might be sufficient in order to upgrade the Linux Mint software part from LM 19.1 to LM 19.2, without causing any unwanted side effects.

But really there is nothing wrong with using Update Manager and upgrading LM 19.1 to LM 19.3. The wanted Maintenance function was introduced by LM 19.2; it is present in LM 19.3 as well.
Only caveat:
Unless you explicitly want to do so, do not permit LM 19.3 to replace your LTS kernel series 4.15.0-xx by some kernel 5.x.x kernel series.

Regards,
Karl

Hi Karl,

Now that you mention it, I upgraded a few of my machines from 19 to 19.3. Not sure now which steps I took, but I remember the upgrade didn't cause me to lose the 4.15 kernel, which I thought it might.
