Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
I've got a new high spec Dell XPS 15 laptop which is less than a year old. I dual loaded Linux Mint 20 the very 1st day I got the laptop alongside Windows, which came pre-installed when I bought the laptop. Therefore I've been using Mint on this laptop for over 7 months already. I also upgraded to Mint 20.1 then recently 20.2 when the updates were available.
Ever since using the original Linux Mint 20 (and also with Mint 20.1 and 20.2) the system would randomly freeze anywhere between one to three times a day (zero times if I'm very lucky), which requires me to hold down the power button for 10 seconds on the laptop to hard shut down it. I was under the impression that Mint is way more stable than Windows and shouldn't be freezing, but it seems way worse than Windows with how much it's freezing.
Another problem started happening a few months ago. Whenever I suspend my laptop then wake it up and enter the password to get back into Mint, it logs me into Mint then either immediately restarts the laptop by itself or within 10 seconds after logging back in it does that. Then my laptop doesn't recognise that my AC power adapter is connected to the USB-C port because if I let Mint or even Windows boot back up and I login to either operating system, it uses my battery only even with the AC power adapter always plugged in. If I try to disconnect & reconnect the AC power adapter it doesn't recognise it's connected, so I've got to shut down whichever operating system. So what I have to do is instead of letting it reboot Mint or Windows is that I need to hold down the power button until the laptop turns off whenever it reboots itself. Then I need to remove the AC adapter from the USB-C port and reconnect it while the laptop is off, then I'll see the power light at the front of the laptop turn on. Then I boot up the laptop and let it boot into Mint or Windows.
Anyone have any solutions for this please?

That could be the cause. Your CPU is too new for that old kernel. Go into update manager and on the View menu select Linux Kernels. Install the latest 5.11 and reboot.bbi1 wrote: ⤴Sun Aug 01, 2021 2:45 amCode: Select all

5.11.0-25 kernel - is that not an older kernel, it says "Supported until February 2022" whereas my current one 5.4.0-80 says Active & "Supported until April 2025"?Kadaitcha Man wrote: ⤴Sun Aug 01, 2021 2:57 amThat could be the cause. If you don't want to stop the random reboots then don't do it. You are quite free to continue experiencing random reboots.
Re: Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
Ok I've done as you've suggested and installed 5.11.0-25 kernel. Hopefully it fixes the reboot problems. Thanks for your suggestion.Kadaitcha Man wrote: ⤴Sun Aug 01, 2021 3:06 amIf you don't want to stop the random reboots then don't do it. You are quite free to continue experiencing random reboots.

Re: Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
No problem. 5.11 is newer than 5.4. Kernel 5.4 gets security updates for the life of Linux Mint, but it doesn't get a lot of new features, which are necessary for newer CPUs. At some point, 5.11 will be replaced by a newer kernel in 2022 but in the meantime it wit will receive updates.
Re: Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
Unfortunately updating to the 5.11.0-25 Kernel hasn't solved this issue. After waking up the laptop after it being suspended, it automatically rebooted itself again.Kadaitcha Man wrote: ⤴Sun Aug 01, 2021 3:14 amNo problem. 5.11 is newer than 5.4. There's also another issue I didn't mention before. The Wifi internet connectivity always has been randomly not been connected, even though the Wifi icon shows that it's always connected. I always have to click on the Wifi icon and click to turn of the Wireless then click to turn back on the Wireless, then it connects again. I have to always do this process multiple times a day to get back my Wireless connectivity.

Re: Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
Yes I would definitely contact Dell given it's still under warranty...No laptop should be misbehaving that way
Regarding that screen shot. Thanks for providing that, but that settings screen/menu doesn't have anything about whether it's treating your PC In power saver mode..or performance or balanced..
Regardless, I think someone needs to take good look at the electrical parts of that PC no matter what.

Re: Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
Wait. You have a complex operation there:
That complex operation needs to be broken down and the steps isolated. Reboot and instead of putting it into suspend when you aren't using it, shut it down. If the problem persists while doing that, then contact Dell. The problem is far less likely to be with the laptop.AC power connection to the USB-C port not to charge after Linux Mint causes the laptop to reboot itself after I wake it up after it's been suspended?
Re: Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
I would not contact Dell either...yet. It wasn't dell who put Linux Mint on their machine.
Does the laptop freeze, and otherwise misbehave when booted into win10 ? If not then it isn't Dell's problem.I dual loaded Linux Mint 20 the very 1st day I got the laptop alongside Windows
In any case I'm sorry you're having so many freezes, I have no idea what that is like I have NEVER had a Linux freeze in over a decade.
Grasping at straws here, maybe you did something some months ago, that has something to do with it, maybe a clean install..
Here's a fellow with a Dell that kept freezing, even with few different Linux distros, and how he solved his problem.

Re: Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
If I shut down Mint while the power cable is in the USB-C port, there's never a problem when I boot into Mint & log in. It only happens when Mint reboots itself after it has been suspended.Kadaitcha Man wrote: ⤴Sun Aug 01, 2021 10:43 pm
That complex operation needs to be broken down and the steps isolated. Reboot and instead of putting it into suspend when you aren't using it, shut it down. If the problem persists while doing that, then contact Dell. The problem is far less likely to be with the laptop.
What I noticed today is last night I shut down Mint and disconnected the power cable. I didn't connect it back to the laptop this morning. I booted into Mint and logged in. It was using the battery power. I then connect the power cable to any USB-C port and it doesn't start charging. I kept the cable connected and shut down. Then boot into Mint again & log in. Still no charging. Restart (instead of shut down) and back into Mint. Same issue. So I shut down and boot into Windows. Windows also doesn't show it's charging, also just uses battery power. Then I shut down. Now that the laptop is off I connect the power cable to USB-C port and it starts charging. Boot into Mint and all is fine, it uses the power cable.
That is what I find very strange. It has to be something wrong with the operating system.
I don't really use Windows at all. Only used it the 1st day I got the laptop and a few times since just for a few mins each time. It never crashed on me, but I haven't really spent much time in Windows.

That's still a very big maybe because it's not actually proven. It could be a UEFI/BIOS problem. A check for an updated UEFI/BIOS might be in order, as well as tests with a USB live media, possibly a different OS, such as MX Linux. If it is a problem with the UEFI/BIOS then you're going to need all the evidence in one place before contacting Dell.
Re: Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
Maybe the Nvidia driver will work better than nouveau on your system. I suspect drivers are available in Driver Manager.
It is also possible you are running into issues because your system is so full.

Re: Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
I changed to the NVIDIA driver as recommended and updated my BIOS by logging into Windows and doing an automatic check for all updates where it also downloads the Dell BIOS firmware and automatically installs the latest version. The BIOS firmware automatically flashed and installed successfully on reboot. Then I went back to Mint.Kadaitcha Man wrote: ⤴Mon Aug 02, 2021 7:59 pmThat's still a very big maybe because it's not actually proven. It could be a UEFI/BIOS problem. Now I have another bigger problem. When I load Mint and enter my password and press enter, it doesn't proceed to log in. The screen goes black color for 1 second then goes off for 2 seconds then takes me back to the Mint login page. I can't log in, it just does the same thing over and over in a loop. I'm starting to panic. Please, can anyone help with this?
From GRUB I tried booting into recovery mode and selected 'clean' to make some free space and it removed 6,000MB of files. Then when I continue nothing happens. So I press power button once then it turns off laptop. I boot Mint normally and at login screen same issue, I can't get in. What should I do?

If you are stuck in a login loop (you put in the correct password and it keeps coming back to the login screen), then try the advice in this post.bbi1 wrote: ⤴Tue Aug 03, 2021 5:59 amNow I have another bigger problem. If it turns out you still need to clear more room, maybe some of the tips in this thread Disk full, unable to login. I need help [SOLVED] may help you

Re: Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
I'm still unable to log in after freeing some disk space. I've managed to free up a little disk space. Before I was at 94% full (with 32GB free space) and now I'm at 93% full. Is 32GB free space not enough to log into Mint and create a login loop?SMG wrote: ⤴Tue Aug 03, 2021 7:59 amIf you are stuck in a login loop (you put in the correct password and it keeps coming back to the login screen), then try the advice in this post.bbi1 wrote: ⤴Tue Aug 03, 2021 5:59 amNow I have another bigger problem. I am also unable to execute the commandline
Code: Select all
rm .ICEauthority .Xauthority
I have executed these following things as per my screenshot. Please see screenshot: https://ibb.co/C64RWQD
I also get the attached error messages when Mint is booting just before getting the login screen, but I think it could be the same error messages I always get every day since the 1st time Mint was installed: https://ibb.co/Wc533XV
I also tried booting via a Live USB of Mint to try and delete some files in my Home folder, but I can't get in because my Home folder is encrypted by Mint. If I could get into my Home folder then I could probably delete about 30GB of files that aren't necessary.
Re: Freezing 1-3 times every day and randomly restarting itself
I think the percentage is more important than the actual space. To me, either one sounds like you should have been able to log in.
I just checked my install and I only seebbi1 wrote: ⤴Tue Aug 03, 2021 6:58 pmI am also unable to execute the commandlineas Mint says "No such file or directory"Code: Select all

in my home directory. Perhaps something changed in between earlier versions of LM (LM19 was in the other thread) and LM20. I do not have much experience with those files. It's my understanding those files are generated/updated each time you boot. That is why removing them can help if they are corrupted--they will be regenerated. I do not know why that file might not be on your system.Snaps are not supported in LM20.bbi1 wrote: ⤴Tue Aug 03, 2021 6:58 pmI have executed these following things as per my screenshot. Here is info on Intel® Software Guard Extensions (Intel® SGX) Support on a Platform. Since I presume you had this message before this problem, I would not expect it is an issue.bbi1 wrote: ⤴Tue Aug 03, 2021 6:58 pmI also get the attached error messages when Mint is booting just before getting the login screen, but I think it could be the same error messages I always get every day since the 1st time Mint was installed: https://ibb.co/Wc533XV
I've also not heard of touchpad/mice issues causing problems logging in.
Maybe this link HOWTO: Recover files from encrypted ecryptfs home directory will help if that is the encryption method you used.
