Mint so slow it is not useable

Post by GrahamM »

About 2 years ago I installed Linux Mint onto a Windows 10 PC as a dual boot. I almost never use Windows 10, but kept it as there are some apps/programs I need.

When I first installed Mint I was really impressed. It zoomed along at an impressive speed.

Now it is not so good.

Mint is a bit slower than Windows to boot (I can live with that) but, once booted, it is SOMETIMES (often) painfully slow.

For example, I just went to open Terminal to run the "top" command and it took 6 seconds for Mint to respond to the initial mouse click, then a further 12 seconds for the terminal window to open. "Top" didn't show anything out of the ordinary.

If I'm running Thunderbird, Firefox and, say, KeePassXC, the machine is so slow it's impossible to use (type a 12 digit word and it takes 8 seconds to appear on the screen. The whole time I can hear the HDD working hard.

It was suggested by others that it's the HDD, but it tests ok. I've also booted into Win10 and that works perfectly - it's blisteringly fast in comparison. Win10 also reports that the HDD is fine.

If, when Mint is really bad, I shut down and reboot then it's usually fine, provided I only use one program/app. The problem definitely seems to be worse when I'm running multiple programs/apps.

What tests can I do to try to fix this?

I have a dell 760 with the exact processor and memory as yours that I'm running Mint 20 on and I have no problems with it. Before Mint 20 I was running 18. From your post I assume Top isn't showing any zombie processes nor is anything unusual running in the background. On the other hand, I'm running Xfce on this machine, and not Cinnamon, which is a known resource hog. Memory for those old machines is really inexpensive on bay of e and that might help.

Based on experience of slowdowns, I would look at:

Paging: Start System Monitor and look at memory usage when the machine is slow.

Disk: Disk errors can cause that type of slowdown. If it is the disk, the disk is about to break. replace with an SSD. The SSD will make everything faster including when paging.

Fans blocked: If the fans are full of dust, the temperature goes up and the processor will slow down.

Javascript: Add Noscript or equivalent to your Web browser to block all the junk that floods your processor and drives your machine into paging.

If you reconfigured your machine about the same time as the slowdown started, it can be things like the wrong entries in fstab. Did you change anything?

I doubt cleaning will help. There is clearly something wrong, with cinnamon itself using 162.5% cpu and it has used 10 minutes of cpu in 45 minutes uptime.
Can you post the result this terminal command please?

Code: Select all

dmesg -T | grep -i -E "error|fail|critical|invalid|warning"

Mate desktop uses less resources. You can test it running from a live USB.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.

I think the issue can be seen in the OP's inxi:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: Intel 4 Series Integrated Graphics vendor: Dell driver: i915 v: kernel
bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:2e12
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa
           resolution: 1600x900~60Hz
           OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 10.0.0 128 bits) v: 3.3 Mesa 20.0.8 compat-v: 3.1
           direct render: Yes
Never mind the "deirect render: yes" bit, it always says that unless the video is completely borked.

But the "OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe" bit does matter, you're getting no video hardware accel and that's going tpo make it very slow.

You do have the correct i915 kernel driver installed but x11 is using the modesetting driver, which will kill hardware accelerated video.

To use the correct driver I'd try the steps here in robim's post:

No, that is not correct. Modesetting does not kill hardware acceleration.

Here is my inxi -Gx
Graphics:
Device-1: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics
vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: modesetting
unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1366x768~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 2000 (SNB GT1)

Modesetting is the newer updated display driver for i915 and is the one usually installed except for a few Intel graphics setups. In those cases the intel display driver will install automatically.

That link shows the person had hardware rendering with the modesetting driver. The person did not change the display driver in order to get hardware rendering.

Use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

X Server runs the graphics and hopefully the log will let us know why the modules for hardware rendering have not loaded.

There is clearly something wrong, with cinnamon itself using 162.5% cpu
Yes and no. It just says you're on a multicore CPU and Cinnamon uses 1 full core + 0,625% of another. Of course, as our OP has a dual core, I agree that's a lot.
Top's default behavior is to express CPU usage on single core basis, so you can have CPU usage up to 100 x number of cores.
To change this behavior enter Shift+i which toggles from Iris mode on (= single core basis) to Iris mode off (total CPU basis = single core value / numbers of core).

It was suggested by others that it's the HDD, but it tests ok. I've also booted into Win10 and that works perfectly - it's blisteringly fast in comparison. Win10 also reports that the HDD is fine.
Try with an SSD. You will see the light by replacing that old mechanical and about to die HDD you have, don't rely on any test by any tool running on windows. Check the windows system event log and filter by errors, check if there is any "bad sector" in there.

Did you run a speed test of your hard disk in mint? Try:

Code: Select all

sudo fdisk -l
Pick the device mounted as your root partition
then:

Code: Select all

$sudo hdparm -t /dev/nvme0n1p7 #Replace with your device ID
You should get something like :

Code: Select all

Timing buffered disk reads: 4430 MB in 3.03 seconds = 1459.77 MB/sec
if yours shows less than 60-70MB/s i insist you should try replacing it.

If you can hear a hard disk, there is something wrong.

The disk model is only 5 years old and should work for a few years in a desktop where there is no bumping around. A significant clicking sound is a worry. 1 TB SSDs are often on sale cheap. It would be my first upgrade.

The works-in-windows differences are not significant as recent releases of Windows, say any release this century, ignore serious errors. What is strange is the works-for-a-while in Linux variation.

Hi. I can often hear HDD's even when my colleagues sitting next to me cannot hear anything (its my "superpower!"). Our desktop PC's are stood on a hard wooden raised floor which acts as a sound-box amplifying sounds and vibrations. The sound is a very feint high pitched squeal - not the tick tick tick of a failed or failing HDD.

The disk was installed new about 18 months ago. I'll probably replace it with a SSD at some point.

My puzzlement was why things work well for days, then I'll have a few hours where Mint is so slow it is virtually unusable. If I shut down and re-boot it very often works fine for days after.

I initially thought the issue got worse when using KeePassXC but that seems to have been a red herring.

I'm slowly working through everyone's suggestions. Thanks to all.

Given your computer has so little memory and you are running Cinnamon, I would advise you to open the Effects app and turn all of them off (slider to the left).

You might also want to consider going into Firefox Settings and turning off "use hardware acceleration when available".

Looking at your top data, I see Timeshift listed. Depending upon how disciplined you are, you might want to consider running Timeshift on-demand rather than on a regular schedule running in the background. Timeshift can definitely slow down the system especially on older equipment with low amounts of available memory. I've been on other threads where Timeshift was found to be the cause of things nearly grinding to a halt when it ran.

Was it working fine when you ran the command to check the Xorg logfile? There are no errors in the file and the modules for hardware rendering are loaded.

Are you running any RDP type software? Sometimes that can interfere with the hardware acceleration showing and working properly.

Hi and thanks for your advice.
I've turned off all effects and disabled hardware acceleration in Firefox.
I will set Timeshift for on-demand.
I'll let you know how I get on.

It was all running fine when I ran the command to check the Xorg logfile. I'm only using the one HDMI monitor and have not changed any graphics settings. I'm not running and RDP type software.
