Stuck at 1024 x 768, no sound and games are runinng terribly

Post by delta_lewis »

Hello this is my first time using Linux. I tried to change my resolution, and it goes up to 1024 x 768, even though my monitor is 1440 x 900. I downloaded Steam and installed Team Fortress 2 and the game ran terribly at 5-15 fps (on Windows 10 it ran at 40-60 fps) and there was no sound in the entire computer. I tried to update my drivers using the Driver Manager, and no success, here's my computer specifications. Can someone please help me?

CPU: Dual Core AMD A6-7480 Radeon R5 8 Compute Cores 2C+6G (-MCP-)

Hello,
If you want some help with Linux configuration, it's mandatory to post your system info.
If you're not afraid of Terminal, it would be the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxz.
If you are, here's a topic showing a GUI method to achieve it :
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=318644
dual boot LMDE4 (mostly) + LM19.3 Cinnamon (sometimes)

Hello again,
About what I see :
- your computer is very old and LM 20.2 is very new and perhaps asking too much to that hardware of yours at some moments, even if you were wise enough to choose the XFCE version.
- OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0 256 bits) means you have no driver installed for your GPU (graphic card) and no acceleration. That's probably the main reason to your problem, so we'll concentrate on that.

I'll check a few things and come right back to you.

More infos about video needed. Please post output of :

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -c video
Also : Temperatures: cpu: 61.5 C is problematic, but this is probably because no help comes from the GPU.
I knew some frying pans that couldn't achieve this :D

This
configuração: latency=0
confirms you have no driver installed.
A correct entry would have been :
configuration: driver=amdgpu latency=0

First, open your Driver Manager, enter password and check if a driver suggestion is available. If yes, follow the instructions.

well, its saying that "your computer doesn't need additional drivers". But it clearly needs, how do I do the other ways of updating and installing drivers?

Graphics support for AMD processors is usually included in the kernel (no extra drivers needed). I use AMD chips myself, so i know current models work fine. However, the A6-7480 (one of the "Excavator" architecture) is a relatively old chip. I would expect support for it be included in the kernel, but i've yet to find anything definitive on the subject.

I found this discussion, which is nearly 4 years old, so may be entirely moot, but perhaps it will point someone in the right direction.

Me neither, but give it some time. I am sure the real experts here will have some ideas.

Try using LM19.2 Xfce. That has the 4.15 kernel which may be a better match for your hardware.

If that works, you can upgrade to LM19.3 and keep using the 4.15 kernel. (Do not try LM19.3 which comes with the 5.0 kernel.)

- I agree with SMG's advice to use a lesser demanding version.

- maybe, if you're on the verge to reinstall you could try something before, which is adding the debian non-free repository to your apt source list

Reason is here :
https://packages.debian.org/buster/firm ... d-graphics

This package may possibly match with your GPU (there are some R5 microcodes) and you'll loose nothing to give it a try (by on the verge of reinstalling, I meant having already backed up what has to be) and providing it works and you follow that sound advice to use LM 19.2 XFCE, you would keep a card in your sleeve in case you'll encounter the same problem.

Hey, sorry if this sounds stupid but, how do I install this? I tried to use the terminal and searching but both failed.
I also created a bootable pen drive with LM 19.2 but it only shows that wallpaper with the LM logo and it stays on a black screen

1st question : Checking here https://askubuntu.com/questions/1342299 ... -20-04-lts my suggestion was not so great. It seems adding debian repositories to Ubuntu 20.04 based LM20.2 would jeopardize the system. However for your info adding a repository is done in the Synaptic Manager / Configuration / Repositories Menu

2nd question :try a boot key of LMDE4. Perhaps its old kernel (4.19) and Debian base could help. There are also some drawbacks : mainly no kernel or driver management tool (have to do it by CLI) and Cinnamon as only DE which is not the best suited to your hardware. However, testing it from a key can't harm. And as LM 19.2 doesn't want to start...

I guess you've already understood it won't be easy to find a solution for gaming with such hardware. But we can keep on trying...

Alright, after some time I got Mint 19.2 running in Compatibility mode, but I think I screwed the main PC by habilitating some video drivers for AMD in a window, I don't remember how I got there, when I try boot up it stays in a black screen. Also a very helpful dude showed me this https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/u ... cs-drivers, I don't know how to install, and he was busy at the moment, so I didn't do anything. For now I have 2 questions: Is there a way to reset the drivers for my main install of Mint? And what do you guys think of those links I sent? Also sorry for taking one day to respond, I was really busy and stressed with all this stuff happening.

The drivers for your computer come from the kernel. There should be nothing for you to install. The graphic drivers should install automatically when you boot the computer.

Do you have Mint installed on the hard drive or are you just booting from the usb? Compatibility Mode is only available when booting the install ISO usb/dvd.

Do not install that. They have been known to sometimes cause problems and we do not even have your computer working properly yet.

Edited to clarify last sentence.

I won't answer directly, but I read SMG's answer.
Follow her advice. She's very competent and imho you can't afford ignoring what she says, given her experience with LM and on the forum.
It's always nice to cross her path in a topic because I know I'll end less stupid than I was at the beginning.

I have Mint 19.2 on a usb, and Mint 20.2 on a SSD, I really don't want to reinstall again because I don't want to damage the SSD.
