Stable Nvidia driver for RTX 2060 on Mint

Post by zalacsek72 »

Hello Linux Mint community.
Finally I decided to install Linux Mint on my main computer.
Everything works fine but having some issues with the Nvidia driver.
After installing the proprietary driver with driver manager I noticed the next issues:
1. when I log out my screen goes total black, my TV says no input anymore only way to get back turn off the pc.
2. occasionally the system boot up with very low resolution (640x480?) and it says no display driver.
I found out that after login pressing the CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE will restart the graphical subsystem so I will get back the normal 4K resolution.
3. Occasional freezes during gaming on steam.
the first 2 issues did not exist before installing the nvidia driver.
My card RTX 2060 is not a new so maybe an older driver works better with this card ?
Driver manager offers only 2 version
470.63.01 - this is installed
460.91.03
If somebody has an experience running stable with this card.
If you recommend to install an older can you explain how to completely remove the existing one first?
Thank you very much for your help.
Have a nice day

Unless you've updated the BIOS that's a quite new machine. And you're running a 5.4 kernel. Try going into update manager > view > view kernels and installing the newest 5.11 kernel. Reboot.

Thanks for your reply.
I am running on the very latest 2021 MSI bios (Ryzen 5000 series compatible) on the motherboard.
Planning to drop in a 5000 series CPU later this year...
I never touched the kernel on any of my previous linux machines.
Is it safe to update it ? - I mean not going to brake things ?
On my Intel i7-6700 miniPC after updating Linux Mint from 20.1 to 20.2 really bad screen tearing appeared on the machine.
I opened a topic here about it recently...
I downloaded 3 different distro live isos none had screen tearing from Live iso.
so decided to boot up Mint 20.2 from usb pen drive - no tearing.....something went wrong during update process ?
after reinstalling the system (20.2) from iso image all the tearing issue gone... it work it should on an old Intel machine...
the boot up issue more of an annoyance not really an issue.
I found a topic where people says sometimes one of the nvidia driver file does not load in time during the booting process...
the only real problem the logging off issue when it seems like the system shuts down the graphics card ?
it was issue as well with the screen saver too but I just disabled it.
today I had about 2 hours counter strike session without any issue what so ever.
yesterday it froze 2 times out I even could not shut down the game had to reboot.
cannot log out to close all running process because the turned off screen issue...
had no issue with the nouveau (open source) driver but you cannot game on it...
strange though...

Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon (cinnamon v5.0.5, kernel 5.4.0-84-generic) here. With the drivers you are using (recommended) everything is working fine.

Check your INTEL driver. Try "switch to nvidia - performance mode" and let us know if it change anything.

There is no Intel driver. This is a computer with an AMD processor.

A more permanent solution to that issue is in this thread [SOLVED] NVIDIA driver failing sometimes on boot ("no hardware acceleration"). Let us know if the fix roblm recommends in the second post addresses the issue for you.

You will definitely need to be using the 5.11 kernel with a 5000 series CPU.

If you ever have concerns about making a change to your computer, run a Timeshift snapshot before making the change.

Kernel changes are one of the easiest changes to undo, so if you do not like the performance, you can switch back to the 5.4 kernel even if you do not take a snapshot. However, you will need the newer kernel when you drop in the newer CPU.

@SMG yea I miss that. So it is AMD + nvidia. It is good that kernel update helped.
