[SOLVED] Kernel 4.15 or 5.14 for LM 192

Post by Pepper-Mint-Patty »

A new kernel 4.15.0-158 has arrived. I noticed there is a kernel 5.4. as well. Should one install that one on 192 instead?

Unless there's a compelling reason to the contrary, if a current kernel series is working without incident for a particular computer, then I stay with that series.

So, if 4.15.x is working fine for you, I'd stay with that. That series is typically better for older hardware (not that it's necessarily bad for newer hardware), and it's supported until April 2023.

New Linux kernels are for new hardware. Unless your machine is pretty bleeding edge you do not need or necessarily want the newest kernel. The 4.15 kernel will keep getting security updates for a couple of years.

As a matter of fact, I do not spend a single thought on the question, which kernel series to use in LM 192. Not even sure I will still be alive the day, when LM 192 will be released.
