[SOLVED]disappeared by itself, the icon with the "shield" on the bottom bar, of the updates

Post by luca72 »

Hello everyone, for the umpteenth time, I have to disturb you, once again cinnamon seems to have the "gremlins" ... I have disappeared from the bar, the "shield" for updates, I tried to look for it, but I can not find it, to put it back where it was, does anyone know how to restore it? ... or what may have happened?
thank you in advance

Write mintupdate in the terminal and it should appear again.

Are you talking about the shield which indicates that update manager is installed and active? If so go to Update Manager, Edit, Preferences the second line down has ' Only show a tray icon.....', if it is blue and the slide is to the right, move it to the left to show the icon.

I'm on XFCE, not Cinnamon, but I have to have "XApp status plug-in" as a panel item for the shield icon to show up.

The shield icon was lost after upgrading from 18.3 to 19 and adding that item to the panel brought it back. I also just tested to verify and it did disappear when I removed that item.

As it doesn't show even when running mintupdate from terminal, right click on panel>Applets to confirm System Tray applet is enabled.

If it is not enabled just click on + icon downside.

thanks again, it seemed the right way, then I saw that that applet that you see from you, is not here, I tried to search also in "download" but I didn't even find it, maybe it's called in another way?

No. You can scroll down in applets to see if X Apps Status Applets is installed and enabled. You can see problems on charging those applets if right click on panel> Troubleshoot>Looking glass>log and also provide errors logs (cat ~/.xsession-errors | nc termbin.com 9999)

In other cases I would try to right click on panel> Troubleshoot> and choose Restore all settings to default but In your case, looking at your inxi report, It looks like you have installed another/s desktop environment/s.

Maybe you have not installed gnome environment completely (ls -l /usr/share/xsessions/) but if you have installed only certain native applications from that environment/s would had the same results because of dependences (look at this, those would be the "gremlins" you have fed after midnight).

If it is so I would try to reinstall cinnamon-common from Synaptic package manager or the whole cinnamon thing (apt install --reinstall cinnamon from terminal) and reboot if there is no problem on reinstalling.
