[SOLVED] Need help deleting partitions to create space

Post by bachcole »

I am on an USB booted LM20, so I have no way of finding my way back to SMG, the lady who was helping me. I have no favorites. I was lucky to get my email.

I've been looking as some of these partitions, but I see no way of wiping them and utilizing the newly acquired empty space.

As others have said before, I believe.
You need to open up GParted & then take a screenshot of all your different disks & then post those pictures back here for others to look at & give advice.

It makes it much easier for those of us helping you if you post in the same thread rather than creating new threads. We do not get notified when you create a new thread, but we do get notified if you post in an existing thread.

For those following along: Here was the most recent thread Booting 20 and Erasing Partitions.

Glad to hear you were able to successfully boot your new usb.

I presume you have opened the GParted app which is on the Linux Mint 20 live session. You have two different hard drives. Can you see those drives in GParted? If so, please take a screenshot.

You can upload a screenshot to an image sharing site such as ibb which will then give you a website link you can paste in your response so we can see the image.

Note: I am in a different time zone than you and will soon be off to bed. However, many other knowledgeable people are on the forum and will be able to help you.

I'm back. I booted from the LM20 stick. I have looked at Gpart and Disk Usage Analyzer, but I see no way to clean up those vast junk piles that I never use.

This is right above the window message window. Step 5 at that link " how to get help" talks about posting a terminal command's results

inxi -Fxxxrz

This will provide much information, non of which is personally identifiable btw, and save everyone muchh time and speculation and allows us to see how Linux Mint views and deals with your PC. This can help us narrow down the problem faster.

So if you can, open a terminal window when you're booted into Linux Mint, ( press ctrl alt t ...holding ctrl and alt and then pressing t ), copy and paste that command I typed above into that terminal window , then hit enter, then copy all the results of that command, then come back here, press that </> button ( fifth from the left just above the white message window, then paste that terminal command's results between the Here's mine for example

I should mention first that I am booting from the USB stick that has LM20 in it. The is the output:

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

OK, now we are getting somewhere... :D

So that is your first disk, sda. It would appear to contain your Linux Mint system...Looking all well & good.
Now you need to do the same again for the other disks on that computer - the ones that you want to tidy up.
If you notice the red arrow below it is pointing to a drop down menu item in GParted.
By clicking on that you should be able to select & display the other drives on your pc.
Can you do that for each one at a time & post the screenshot back here as before...

That appears to be your LM17.3 Mint Rosa install.

If you want, you could install LM20 on that disk and it will complete erase the Mint Rosa install and put LM20 there. You do not have to erase Mint Rosa first and reformat the drive in order to install LM20, but you can if you want to get practice doing it.

Reminder that bachcole wants to keep his existing LM19.1 install in addition to installing LM20. Based on data provided so far (if I consolidated the data correctly) it appears:
  • ---------sda (msdos partition table)---------
  • sda1 - ext4 - Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa
  • sda2
  • sda5 - linux swap
  • ---------sdb (msdos partition table)---------
  • sdb1 - ntfs - Windows 7
  • sdb2 - ntfs
  • sdb3
  • sdb5 - ext4 - Linux Mint 13 Maya
  • sdb6 - linux swap
  • sdb7 - ext4 - Linux Mint 15 Olivia
  • sdb8 - ext4 - Linux Mint 17 Qiana
  • sdb9 - ext4 - Linux Mint 19.1
  • ---------sdc (loop partition table)---------
  • sdc1 - vfat - Transcend
There is lsblk -f in this post and the output of sudo parted --list is in this post.

Can you give us a screenshot of the drive with your Mint 19 install on it?

If you scroll back to RIH's post with the image with the red arrow pointing to the upper right corner, that is where you would switch to another drive while in GParted. The drive with the Mint 19 install will have approximately nine rows on it. Please take a screenshot of that and give us the link to the image.

I think that depends on exactly what you want to do.
If it is as SMG suggests - add Mint 20.x & keep your current 19.1 then it depends how adventurous you want to be.. :D

As far as adding Mint 20.x then, as SMG has already suggested, replacing 17.3 Rosa is the easy & sensible way to go..

Tidying up the other disk to just leave your current 19.1 is a bit more problematic.
Below only works if you are certain that you are happy to lose Windows 7, Mint 13, Mint 15 & Mint 17 .. If you want something else then please clearly state exactly what..

1. If it were me (lol) I would use BackUP Tool to download all the current Software Selection & Personal Data & then use GParted to completely reformat the disk to 1 partition, re-install Mint 19.1 & then restore settings & applications via the Backup Tool.

2 Another alternative is to use something like Clonezilla (not an easy product to understand) or the well documented & user friendly Foxclone to clone your copy of Mint 19.1, use GParted to reformat the disk to 1 partition & then restore via Foxclone..
viewtopic.php?f=47&t=315557

3. You could use GParted to manually remove all the Windows 7, Mint 13, Mint 15 & Mint 17 distributions & just be left with the current Mint 19.1 Partition & a number of other blank partitions. How many partitions depends on how the current partitions sit on the disk, it should (I think) be a maximum of 2 & a minimum of 1.

RIH has suggested some possible options. I think you mentioned in the prior threads that you are okay with deleting everything except your current LM19.1 install and you would like to add an LM20 install.

Taking a look at the screenshot, your LM19.1 install is on sdb9 which is in the middle (the box with no name on it) with only 26.5GiB of space. To increase the space it uses, we need to format the space adjacent to it and then "stretch" your LM19.1 install into that space. It is a multi-step process to reformat the space you are no longer using and them to extend the root partition of LM19.1 into that newly formatted space. Because your LM19.1 install is so small, we can reclaim the space used by Mint 13 Maya (sdb5) and double your current LM19.1 install without even touching any of the other installs. We could then also reclaim the space used by Mint 17 Olivia (sdb7) and double again the amount of space LM19.1 would have. Notice that all the partitions I mentioned are adjacent to each other on the screenshot. That is why we wanted you to use GParted so you could see what is adjacent.

Before doing any work of that sort, we recommend backing up any data you might have. Have you done that yet?
Is there anything on those old installs you might still need?
Is there anything on Mint 19.1 you do not want to lose?

Re: Need help deleting partitions to create space

Post by bachcole »

I don't see 26.5GiB on the Gparted list. Why?

What I really want is to save data from LM19.1 and make the biggest possible partition and put LM20 on it, with the saved data. I have already backed up my photos, documents, and Internet favorites from LM19.1, and I have not felt it necessary to go back to 17, 13 or any of the other partitions for many years. And I don't actually want to use LM19.1 other than to retrieve data from it.

I can probably live with one super-massive partition with LM20 on it. My data, documents, photos, and favorites are on a USB stick sitting right in front of me. I don't really need LM19.1.

Does any of this inspire in you anything else to say to me? Keep in mind that it helps me if you have to repeat yourself as I need clear instructions before I do anything dangerous/stupid.

I want to add, just in case I can't contact you for a while, that I deeply appreciate your help, and that you are not helping just me but also my wife and two adult children.
