<SOLVED> Random Freeze Cinnamon on HP ProBoox 450 G7

Post by mintygum »

My home setup with HP probook 450 G7 and two external monitors freezes at least once a day - often when I lock it over night and sometimes randomly though they day. It is a dual boot machine and it never happens in windows.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forum, mintygum.

Your computer has a 10th-gen Intel CPU and I recommend you upgrade to the 5.11 kernel because newer kernels have been known to clear freeze issues which happen with older kernels.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.11 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Upgraded kernel successfully but unfortunately over night machine locked up and I had to hard restart again this morning.

In looking at the /var/log/syslog I see:

Was there any information after you put it to sleep? That is just the sleep info which looks fine.

Presuming you on still on the same boot cycle as you were this morning, I would suggest running the following in a terminal.
journalctl -rb -1 | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

That command prints the journal log information of the prior boot cycle (the one which you stopped with the power button this morning) in reverse order (so the reason for the freeze should be near the top) and sends it to termbin. Hopefully, there will be some messages which might gives clues as to why the system froze.

No more information after that so I assume it locked.

Here is a link to the journal https://termbin.com/hkjh

A copy of the (perhaps) relevant part is

It looks like the sysetm went to sleep around 22:23 and got the wake-up message just after 8a.m.

I'll go check the journal output.

There is alot of action between the time you wake up the computer and the message about the power key being pressed.

The only odd lines were:

Code: Select all

Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: The canary thread is apparently starving. Taking action.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Demoting known real-time threads.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Successfully demoted thread 25303 of process 25187.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Successfully demoted thread 2512 of process 2349.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Successfully demoted thread 2511 of process 2349.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Successfully demoted thread 2510 of process 2349.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Successfully demoted thread 2509 of process 2349.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Successfully demoted thread 2349 of process 2349.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Successfully demoted thread 2424 of process 2349.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Successfully demoted thread 2435 of process 2349.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Successfully demoted thread 2507 of process 2349.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Successfully demoted thread 2508 of process 2349.
Oct 14 08:03:00 suttix rtkit-daemon[1429]: Demoted 11 threads.
I do not know what processes those thread might have been running, but looking at what happens after that, it seems like the computer is functioning normally. Everything goes to the wake state and firmware updates are run as well as other start-up events.

Here is some information on What is the "canary thread" and why is it starving?

I would suggest giving it a bit more time before you decide it is "frozen". There was a lot happening when you thought it was frozen.

08:03:00 - Woke the computer.
08:03:46 - Pressed the power button.
-------------
46 seconds elapsed wait time.

Looking at the other end (when the system went to sleep), it appears you may not have intentionally put it to sleep. It appears the system went to sleep probably because it hit the "Suspend when inactive for" timer setting. I do not know if that has any relevance to what happened at wake-up time.

Thank you for that - did not freeze last night. I will be more patient and see if it wakes up.

An update - did goto sleep on Saturday - was more patient and it restarted fine - feels like kernel upgrade may have worked.

Will see how this week goes and report back.

Thanks for the feedback. That is a fairly common computer, so knowing what works for you will help others.
