There is no answer to that question that everyone will agree with. You will only get conflicting opinions.
I certainly do not use it and neither does any of the long-term Linux users around me. That's all I can tell you.
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!
Re: Ransomware, malware, virus , hacking.....
Find some information and read a little.
Each of us has limited knowledge.
So a little here and a little there and you have a bigger picture of knowledge.
For example you can read also
1. https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... urity.html
2. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Security
But note that arch linux is a different system and not everything will work identically.
About software for virus
- Software can only detects known viruses
- Often it does not contain viruses, but hashes
So there is a small chance that the file will be misdiagnosed as a virus.
But maybe can faster scan system.
...
You have to assess the risk yourself.

Re: Ransomware, malware, virus , hacking.....
I do not want to be rude, not step on someone's toes but I have to say I'm slightly disappointed.
When I switched to Linux - first UBUNTU sometime in 2006 and then Mint MATE which is
a more PERFORMABLE INTERFACE - the tone was different:
People beat their chests and laughed at Windows & MAC users
who struggled with constant updates, antivirus software and constant attacks .
Now I notice a slightly toned down and more subdued tone in the Linux
advocates and despite the fact that I make ALL updates and despite the fact that I
switch to the later versions of Mint Mate as powerful statements in previous questions
told me to do, there is more and more of it the possibility that something can still create
chaos like now the latest ransomware attacks described in text in several places
and not just the youtube videos that you think you should stop watching.
Why is SELinux not implemented? This is described as important in many places.

Re: Ransomware, malware, virus , hacking.....
Then I stumbled upon this :
Did anyone mention this ?
Hello WharfRat,
To be honest there is no pressing need as such, but since I'm working on my own startup and applying for patent I would like the data to be as safe as possible on my laptop. Now in Windows 10 I had the bitlocker encryption enabled for the entire disk but I had to disable it in order to dual boot Linux Mint cause otherwise the TPM and bitlocker feature of Windows caused problems with the installation of Linux Mint.
So since I'm transitioning to Linux Mint I would really like to have the data secured as much as possible. That's also the reason why I asked for a guide on SE LINUX.
I had a couple more questions of you don't mind...
1. What would you recommend between AppArmor, SELinux and GRSecurity PAX?
2. The link to RHEL SELinux guide that you provided, will that work on Linux Mint as well?
P.S. I understand that AppArmor/SELinux/GRSecurity PAX don't necessarily protect data incase of physical theft like encryption does but rather they protect the system itself from being messed up or outside attacks.
Regards,
Chintan.

Re: Ransomware, malware, virus , hacking.....
Hi Vilsen.
The question to WharfRat was asked 5 years ago, and WharfRat answered it thoroughly.

Even though WharfRat's very knowledgeable, would I use 5 year old advice? Nope, I'd ask a specific question to see if this advice is still relevant.
HTH.

The possibility has always existed. At what level this possibility becomes credible is up to each user's working scenario.Vilsen wrote:... the possibility that something can still create

I don't implement it for the same reason that I don't put a roll cage in my car and wear a helmet and fire suit to drive to the market. Yes, one could argue that it would make me safer, but the logistics in doing so aren't worth mitigating the risk.Vilsen wrote:Why is SELinux not implemented?

Hi Mike,
For some reason any comment seems to almost cause an argument which isn't intended, but I'll waste a little more time. Not much more though.
The ISO incident is not the same as a virus being delivered remotely.
The forum incident, which I've not heard of but even if it is true, again, is also not the same as a virus.
These are very different security incidents - both of which have nothing to do with the user's actions or, if the backdoor was done properly, would most likely not have been picked up by AV.
Both incidents (ISO and forum) are the results of an attack against a server, using an exploit. Since this server probably runs Linux, I just took it as example of known, successful attacks on a Linux system or its server program.
Home users are not exposed to this kind of attack, except if they set-up a server on their computer, but are exposed to attacks when browsing, through malicious code on a web page.
Though it appears as different things in a first approach, in both case it is an exploit of a vulnerability.
Regards,
MN

Re: Ransomware, malware, virus , hacking.....
Why?
A user's experience - nil problems in a decade+ and nil problems for 50+ users I know who have Linux Mint.
I know one Windows user who kept getting "viruses" called "Updates" written by Microsoft until Microsoft completely wiped her system, data and all.
So?
No antivirus would have stopped MS destroying everything.
No viruses for Linux.
No Linux updates destroying things.
So?
Alternative problem - you aren't doing backups and your disk fails. Now what? Antivirus won't fix that. An off-line backup disk can't get hacked. OK, use two disks alternatively for extra protection - and a tin foil hat....
Re: Ransomware, malware, virus , hacking.....
When I say that I do not want to be rude or step on someone's toes,
it's depressing to see that some people have only one thing to say:
You can lead a horse to water but you can not make it drink.
Can your supremacy for a while descend from the horse's back
and get a little closer to us little little people who do not understand
how everything works but who take backup daily and still worry about
ransomware came in and ENCRYPTED the entire BACKUP DISK too!
Does FOILHAT help with that?

Re: Ransomware, malware, virus , hacking.....
You didn't ask me directly, but had you, the answer would've been ".... nah, no, not really, no."
A large majority of responders in this thread have told you to rather than worry stop watching that rubbish, with some additional few providing you with resources so as to help you make up your own mind as to threat-levels, and then a single responder spewing the same rubbish that got you your panties in an uproar to begin with. Yet, confronted with that result, you conclude to be "slightly disappointed" (in Linux and/or its community).
As has been the case in more of your threads you are incredibly susceptible to confirmation bias; to only hearing that which you were already convinced of anyway and/or want to hear. Here specifically, not those many, many replies telling you that you need not worry but only the few telling you that you may or should --- since that's of course way more fun as it allows you to act/feel better than them complacent Linux snobs, which is what you had mentally scripted in advance would be the outcome of this thread.
As such, let me repeat what many others have already said once more: you need on desktop Linux not worry. There is and by nature of the technology always will be be lots of conceptual risks out there but they in the real rather then conceptual world stay conceptual on desktop Linux. On desktop Linux you have to go out of your way to contract any form of malware; not going out of your way suffices as counter-measure on desktop Linux and in the real world.
Just below MikeNovember will tell you different and Karlchen, if he can still stand the discussion in the first place, will again point you towards some resources to try and help you decide for yourself. It is up to you what and whom you believe; we can't change that; cannot make you drink. The mentioned large majority will however in the meantime not be installing virusscanners, not be installing rootkit-scanners, not be installing whatever nonsensical scanners, and will not be watching the ignorant FUD-nonsense which you describe.
Re: Ransomware, malware, virus , hacking.....
You had to write: -" we can´ t make you drink"
Condescending ?

Re: Ransomware, malware, virus , hacking.....
Possibly. I can't blame anyone.
You keep paying attention only to what you don't want to hear. You don't read the information that people give you, only the way they talk to you. This is why I no longer bother to try to help you. Your attitude is putting you at a disadvantage.
Rene may be trying to tell you the same thing.
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!
Re: Ransomware, malware, virus , hacking.....
Well, not really in fact. I was replying to a post in which you objected to that formulation and put it in right after "We can't change that" more or less to emphasize that that was the exact meaning of the formulation --- and just in case you don't know, and if that's the problem here, "You can lead a horse to water but you can not make it drink" is a common American saying; not something specific or specifically derogatory or anything like that.
But otherwise, yes, if you feel it condescending and most certainly if it's the only thing you got from that post, yes, do certainly feel free; also I shan't at least in this thread be disturbing you further.
