I didn't read the whole other post, but isn't it a good idea to have that Nvidia card working with a driver of some sort?

Not when one is running in Intel power-save mode. That mode purposely prevents the Nvidia driver from loading--to save power.

In this post you indicated you changed the desktop environment to xfwm4 + compton to fix the missing icons and pointer issue. What was the setting before you changed it?

I think in Xfce you may have the option to change windows compositors as well as the windows manager. This is old information, but maybe it will give you some ideas XFCE compositors. Here is more recent information on Which window manager? Metacity+/Xfwm4+/Compiz ?!?.

Sometimes something as simple as ensuring that, in whatever browser you may be using, smooth scrolling is enabled can help.
smooth scrolling is enabled in firefox

In Intel mode the driver is supposed to show as N/A. I explained that earlier in this topic.

I am not sure what this means because I am not sure how you are switching to the open source driver. You should check the output of inxi -Gx to make sure you are actually using the open-source driver.

The person in that thread is using a much older computer than what you have. While it is possible that solution might work for you, I would not assume that it will. You will have to test it to see if it does.

The person in that thread created a Linux Mint MATE ISO usb and tested his hardware in a live session to see how each of the compositors/windows managers worked. You can do the same. If it does work, I believe it is possible to install the MATE desktop and then switch to using it. You know how to use Timeshift and making a snapshot before any installations are always a good idea.

I do not know enough about the Xfce options to know if marco works with Xfce. I know it is possible to add compton How to switch to Compton for beautiful tear free compositing in XFCE . Remember, Timeshift snapshots are your best friend.

I am not sure why you are asking about Cinnamon. The link you provided has the MATE desktop.

It is my understanding while many consider Xfce to be the "lightest" desktop, MATE is rather similar in its resources needs. Cinnamon definitely has more graphics requirements which make it "heavier", but turning off the Effects helps reduce its "heaviness".
