system crashes randomly

I've been running Mint on my Dell Inspiron7300 for nearly a year, most recently Mint 20.2 with Cinnamon 5.0.5
Throughout this time, I have been experiencing random crashes in which the system freezes, responding to neither keyboard nor mouse.
When this occurs, the only recourse I've found is to hold the power button down until the system shuts down (this one key does work) and reboot.
This always restores normal function.
It's not especially frequent, perhaps every 10-12 hours of use, on average. I've been living with it as one of life's little frustrations, but maybe there's a fix?
I haven't noticed any pattern to it.
Any suggestions on how I can begin troubleshooting this? What info I can supply that might point somebody in the right direction? Thank you in advance!

I had this issue as well. Ultimately it was traced down to the screensaver and Sleep mode. Basically, sleep mode is a non-standardized process which is implemented on the hardware vendor side. After i disabled Sleep mode, I never had an issue. Others here have reported that changing a bios setting, power supply idle to "Typical Current Idle", has fixed the issue.

Of course both of these assume that Sleep mode is what is causing the freezing. If it's occurring when you're in the middle of something, that's another issue.

I suggest you update to the 5.11 kernel available in Update Manager. Newer kernels seem to be a better match for the newer hardware (10th-gen Intel) that you have.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.11 kernel:

• Open Update Manager.
• Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
• Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
• Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
