No Sound On Fresh Install [Mint 20.2]

Post by yassir56032 »

This is on a dual boot laptop. On win10 sound works fine, I have disabled fast startup on win10, and secure boot in my bios. I'm unaware of how to disable audio in the bios, but I doubt that is the issue considering sound works fine on win10.

I just did a fresh install of 20.2 and had no sound. I found out the volume slider in the task bar was set to zero, so I slid it to max and it works fine now. Maybe that setting is set to zero by default?

Sound issues can get quite involved. Unless it is real simple I am unlikely to solve this for you. But I recommend you install Pavucontrol in the Software Manager (if it is not already installed) and then start it (Pulse Audio Volume Control) up. Go to the 'Output Devices' tab and tell us what is available across from 'Port:'. There could be 2 Ports on that page. Select different things and test.

No it's just dummy output and nothing else:

See if clicking on that little speaker with an X on it does anything for you.

Maybe try some of this (not all of it):

This one might not help you, but it offers some interesting reading:

that just mutes the output. As for the stackexchange link, the only thing that could make sense is enabling the speaker on the bios, but I doubt that since win10 seems to manage to get the speakers working without any tinkering around in the bios.

Update: I've tinkered around on my computer's bios some more and still no luck as of now. I can't seem to find any options that are related to audio at all, the closest being something about audio delay, but nothing about the in-built speakers on the device. Windows still both recognizes and manages to get the speakers working. I've tried some of the fixes on stack exchange and the like to no avail, I think I've exhausted everything that could work generically on my device, but that hasn't worked. As I've realized before, it would seem sound problems are very system specific, and so far I've had no luck.
also here is what

aplay -l

displays.

What does your configuration tab show? I have a 10 year old Gigabyte MB with an AMD processor and an Nvidia video card in the gt9800 series and I have never been able to get sound via HDMI. The configuration tab in Pavucontrol shows NO HDMI sound devices at all (Video works just fine).

On the other hand my much newer ASUS 570 series motherboards with nvidia GTX1650 video cards (one MB has a Ryzen 5 processor and the other has a Ryzen 7 processor) support sound via HDMI just fine. Under the Pavucontrol configuration tab I had to set any analog or optical output to OFF to get the HDMI audio to work consistently.

I'm not sure of what sound via HDMI would mean. I have no HDMI connection to the laptop in the first place, and not like I could get something like that, since it doesn't have an HDMI port. I'm trying to get linux to at least recognize and use the sound card on this thing, then maybe get the built-in speakers to work, or headphones. Sorry if I'm just being stupid here but wouldn't that be something different?

On the other hand, the config tab is very similar to what you described. No HDMI sound devices at all, all sound profile options show "(unplugged) (unavailable)" next to them, though I also don't see any analog or optical output, the only option is "built-in audio". Video works on some sites like Youtube on the laptop, some websites don't seem to though, so that's something else I need to look into later. Though I don't really see how that would be related to the sound not working.

I didn't pay enough attention to everything you wrote. Ignore my comments completely! They apply to trying to connecting to a TV or monitor via HDMI and trying to get the sound to work, a problem that has vexed me for years. Your post came up when I searched on "HDMI sound".

oh, my apologies! I hope you can get your issue figured out, and I hope I do too. It's really been bugging me that I can't get the sound to work on an otherwise great OS so far.
