How to remove non-applet icons from panel?

Post by NathanShirley »

How do you hide non-applet applets from the panel (right side near notifications, clock, etc.)? For example, I've installed MEGASync and Diodon which both run at startup (which I want), but I don't need or want to see their icons on the panel. They don't show up in the 'applets' list, so the applets I've downloaded to try to hide them can't hide them as they can't be found as applets...

I tried various combinations of removing 'XApp Status Applet' and also 'System Tray', but none of that really seemed to work as I hoped. One combination (can't remember which) removed them, but it did something to MEGAsync which it doesn't seem to like, causing it to load in a window at startup (and it acts like it might shut it down if you close the window).

I'm assuming I'm missing some obvious way to simply hide them without actually altering how they run?

It's a new system I put together for audio/video production--an upgrade from my old Intel system. I'm dual booting with Windows 11 (on a separate physical drive) for the Windows software I can't do without, but would like to eventually transition to Linux completely.

The only way to disable a tray icon for a non-applet is through the settings of that application itself. For example I can do that for quite a few of my applications: Chatty (a chat client), Streamlink GUI (a streaming program), Deluge (torrent), Deadbeef (audio player), Psensor (CPU temperature app) all give me the option to enable/disable their system tray icon.

If that application doesn't give you an option to turn off system tray icon, then there is nothing Mint can do about it. Unfortunately when it comes to the system tray, a lot of apps on Linux are really lacking options compared to Windows. The only way to improve it is to demand the feature from the developers.

Thanks for the information.

I just found a decent workaround using another applet: 'Hideable applets'

It took some experimentation, but enabling the 'Xapp Status Applet' and then hiding it using 'Hideable applets' worked. That seems to hide all non-applets, including the 'Update Manager', which is fine for me. It has some odd side effects, like causing the 'Printers' and 'Removable drives' icons to show even when they're not in use (and configured to only show when in use). But hiding them with 'Hideable applets' seems to work, allowing them to show only when in use. 'Hideable' has some curious default settings, but can be configured nicely.
