[SOLVED] Your system is currently running without video hardware acceleration

Post by FilthySins »

Your system is currently running without video hardware acceleration, you may experience poor performance and high CPU usage.
Linux Mint Cinnamon

Hello,
I need some help. So first my Linux update manager wouldn't update and then I did a lot of stuff and finally fixed it. Then when I rebooted my resolution became 640x800 and I fixed it with the terminal GRUB=AAAAxBBBB (a and b is the res) I wrote 1680x1050 and then it was fixed but now I am experiencing this problem Your system is currently running without video hardware acceleration, you may experience poor performance and high CPU usage.

you seem to be missing the nvidia drivers. Did you update the kernel from an earlier version (5.4, 5.8, etc)? That usually causes problems.

Easiest fix I'm aware of
1. purge nvidia* from the system (e.g. sudo apt-get purge nvidia*)
1.1 Might want a timeshift backup before doing this, just in case :)
2. reboot
3. reinstall the recommended nvidia-xxx driver from driver manager

Before I do that, I have the recommended Nvidia drivers and the Linux Kernel version 5.11.0-40-generic which is supported until February 2022. I see here that there is another kernel (5.13.0-21) which is supported until August 2022. Which one do you recommend me to have active and how do you make a backup?

Thank you.

either kernel option is fine, although you might wanna jump to 5.13 just for the longer support window (i mean, you'll kind of "have" to come February anyway)

Okay, I will switch to the 5.13 kernel. How do I make a backup though?

System snaps are usually Timeshift's job. Take a snapshot before upgrading or installing any driver. By the way, does the driver manager say something about your nvidia drivers ?

Your system is currently running without any video drivers including the ones which should install automatically from the kernel. Can you please give us more information about the "fix" you did in the terminal, because that may be part of the problem. I think you should remove that "fix" if you want your system to work properly.

Usually, if the Nvidia driver is installed and the resolution is not correct, we recommend the fix in this post [SOLVED] NVIDIA driver failing sometimes on boot ("no hardware acceleration").
