Linux Mint 20.2 logs not available

Post by imxaditya21 »

So I've been facing some problem with application from like a month. These problems mainly include "apps not opening" situation.
Remember each of these apps was working, and I don't remember any specific update which might have caused this dysfunctionality.

I can't open firewall: Clicking on Firewall app from menu opens up a password prompt as usual, the Firewall icon appears in the panel, and then disappears.

I can't open protonvpn: Same thing happened as mentioned above.

Logs: When I open logs, I see no result, everything empty. Each section of logs(important, All, applications, system, security, and Hardware) is empty(No Results).

When I open Firewall from terminal using command

Code: Select all

gufw
it shows:

Code: Select all

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/share/gufw/gufw/gufw.py", line 30, in <module>

    self.gufw.listening_model.set_value(iter_row, 1, int(line_split[1].strip())) # port

The problem with protonVPN was discussed with their customer care executive, he also couldn't solve it, if you are interested I can share more info on protonVPN, but I request you to focus on Firewall and Logs issue mainly.

Thank You in advance. Any help is appreciated.

I have seen this gufw issue before. It was a Python version problem if I remember correctly. The user had installed a different version of Python, removed the system-installed Python. But this is just a guess, it might be some other issue.

I have no idea about protonvpn.

The Logs application might also be using Python (again just a guess). Can you at least see the logs in the /var/log folder? Are they there? Mine looks like this:

Code: Select all

 ➜ ls /var/log
apache2 dist-upgrade gpu-manager.log mintsystem.log syslog.1
apt dmesg hp mintsystem.timestamps timeshift
aptitude dmesg.0 installer mintupdate.log ubuntu-advantage-timer.log
aptitude.1.gz dmesg.1.gz journal openvpn ubuntu-system-adjustments-adjust-grub-title.log
atop dmesg.2.gz kern.log private ubuntu-system-adjustments-start.log
auth.log dmesg.3.gz lastlog samba ubuntu-system-adjustments-stop.log
btmp dmesg.4.gz lightdm speech-dispatcher wtmp
cups dpkg.log miktex syslog Xorg.0.log

Yeah I've seen that too, may have tried there solution but don't remember correctly.

Yes, I can access that, using the command

Code: Select all

ls /var/log/
here it is:

Code: Select all

alternatives.log dmesg.4.gz
alternatives.log.1 dpkg.log
apt dpkg.log.1
boot.log gpu-manager.log
boot.log.1 lightdm
boot.log.2 mintsystem.log
boot.log.3 mintsystem.timestamps
boot.log.4 timeshift
boot.log.5 ubuntu-advantage-timer.log
cups ubuntu-advantage-timer.log.1
dmesg ubuntu-system-adjustments-adjust-grub-title.log
dmesg.0 ubuntu-system-adjustments-start.log
dmesg.1.gz ubuntu-system-adjustments-stop.log
dmesg.2.gz Xorg.0.log
dmesg.3.gz Xorg.0.log.old

What to do now? Thanks

Not sure where to go from here, hopefully someone else has ideas. What does the following say?

Code: Select all

python3 --version
which python3
python --version
which python

Hi, folks.

By the way, the aplication (Gnome) Logs does not read and display the (pure text) logfiles in the directory /var/log. gnome-system-log did / does.
The Gnome Logs application reads and displays the content of the systemd journal.
The systemd journal can also be inspected by using the terminal command journalctl. - journalctl has got a lot of different commandline options. Check out with the help of "man journalctl".
The systemd journal might (need not, but migh) give hints why a number of applications do not work.

Karl

Thanks karlchen, didn't know that!

imxaditya21 That looks OK.

This might be a bug in gufw https://github.com/costales/gufw/issues/9 There is a patch mentioned there by the developer but I'm not sure if it's safe to try. It seems like the cause of the problem might lie somewhere else, and the developer is "fixing the bug" by avoiding certain warnings to prevent it from crashing.

Maybe there is something wrong with your system services? What does this say?

Code: Select all

systemctl status ufw.service
And this:

Code: Select all

systemctl status rsyslog.service
How about

Code: Select all

journalctl | grep ufw

Hi.

journalctl | grep ufw will appear to hang forever and never display anything.
Reasons:
journalctl without any commandline arguments will want to display the complete system journal, which is still on the disk. It will do so one screenfull at a time and then wait for a keypress before displaing the next screenfull.
I.e. journalclt already pipes its output through a pager. This is why the second pipe | grep ufw will never receive any input and you will never see any screen output.

Assuming that you want to inspect only the system journal from system start till now, this commandline would work:
journalctl -b --no-pager |grep -i "ufw" | less
Display the current system session. Do not stop on every screenfull. Pipe the output stream and grep for "ufw" (lower case or uppercase). Pipe this output through the pager less

At least it worked here on my system.

Karl

It's OK, he was just pointing out my mistake, as I am not familiar with journalctl (looks like it has hundreds of thousands of lines of output) and out of my depth here. Apologies for the misleading.
Anyway, hopefully someone else has ideas. The Github issue seems promising.
