installed Zoom; how do I run it?

Post by needsleep »

I installed Zoom and now I don't know how to run it. I tried to re-install it, when the system asked me if I (really wanted) to re-install it. No, not really. I just want to run it.

What I've tried--
If I hit the LM symbol in the bottom left corner of my screen, then hit ALL next to the 9 dot matrix symbol, under the bolded Applications section, I would think it would appear in the resulting list. It doesn't.

If I instead type in 'Zoom' in the large field at the bottom, I get all sorts of "hits" for zoom listed on the left, but none of those look like the app is installed. Here are the hits that are pertinent:
do a search on my browser for zoom
search Wikipedia for zoom
lookup zoom in dictionary
search computer for zoom
install package 'zoom-player'
and a whole pile of hits that don't apply.

I went into Software Manager and see Zoom there and a big green button for Launch and a big red button for Remove. Surely, this is not how you are supposed to run a program you've installed, is it?
That green button does work, so I've essentially found a work-around.
There is a time delay after you first get into Software Manager, which would be inconvenient if you were regularly using it to launch Zoom. I guess I'll leave Zoom up until I get a better solution.

Here's the O/S version I'm running...
> cat /etc/issue
Linux Mint 20.3 Una
(Note: this is the Mate edition)

Thanks

Hi needsleep,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

How did you install Zoom? There are various methods of installing popular software like Zoom, for example Linux Deb files from their website, flatpak, snap packages (disabled in LM20+). I try to avoid flatpak and snap packages unless there is no other way to install software that I want.

Zoom requires authentication before it will run properly. Although I had already installed this last year, I had to re-login and re-authenticate this now in the year 2022, then it came right up.

Download Center - Zoom
-- has current versions as Linux Mint installation deb file (Mint v18+), save the file, then double click the file to install it.
** remove any installed Zoom before installing this version.

Hope this helps ...

Zoom website will ask which Linux do you want. Use the drop down to select Mint! Working for me since 2018.

They do frequent updates so check often!

Thank you for taking my question.

Here are the results you requested,
inxi -Fxzd.txt
lsusb.txt
> How did I install Zoom?
I went to Zoom Download Center, page (https://zoom.us/support/download). It sensed I was some kind of Linux. In a drop down I selected Mint. It selected "deb (for Mint 17.1) Version 5.9.1 (1380)." Download button presented. Options: Open with GDebi Package Installer (default) or Save File, I selected open with Package Installer. Installed without issue. And it fired it up at the end of the install. Looked ok... no one to connect to at that point though.

I will proceed to remove the installed version, save the download package, and re-install. It did not offer the snap or flatpak versions. Thank you for commenting that I'd want to use those two apps conservatively.

> "Double click the saved downloaded Zoom package to run it" - ahh, nice to know! Saves quite a bit of time instead of opening Package Installer, and navigating to and opening package. Just by commenting a few things you know so well, you can help me so much. very much appreciated.

SOLVED Re: installed Zoom; how do I run it? (Mate 20.3)

Post by needsleep »

I uninstalled Zoom via Software Manager. Then I double clicked on the downloaded package and Software Manager came back up and reported that the same version was already installed, with an option button to Reinstall Package, which I pressed.

However, after the Reinstall, the very same screen was shown. Maybe it didn't need to be reinstalled.
Then Zoom upgraded itself.

Now Zoom is showing when I type in "zoo" into the search bar, and I've added it to the panel. So I'm all set.

Thanks to all.

Hi needsleep,

You are welcome from all of us that replied...

FYI: It helps to copy and paste the results of certain console terminal commands rather than try to attach them to a post because it makes it easier for those trying to help you. The results of these commands let you and us know important information about your system. Using the code tags as "JerryF" suggested is the preferred method especially if the results are lengthy. The Results of "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" are not usually lengthy, so you could just copy and paste them like below. This allows people to highlight certain important information for you.

From your replies, it looked like you downloaded the Zoom for Linux Mint v17.x yet you are using Linux Mint 20.3, so you should use their newest version which is for v18+. Even if the older version works, you might consider removing it and installing the Zoom v18+ for Linux Mint, if you have not already done so.

FYI: What information did we get from these results that are important?

We now know you are using the newest version of Linux Mint Mate 20.3 Una (based on Ubuntu 20.04 Focal) on a 64 bit Dell desktop Dual Core Intel Core2 6600 with a bios from 11/22/2007. This means you should use software made for Linux Mint 20.03 (based on Ubuntu 20.04 Focal) 64-bit. You might consider checking for any newer Bios updates and applying them.

Your system has a NVIDIA GK208 [GeForce GT 720] graphics video adapter that appears to be running well with the correct drivers, OpenGL: renderer: NVIDIA GeForce GT 720/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 470.86.

From "lsusb", we can tell you have a "Sunplus Innovation Technology Inc. Full HD webcam" for Zoom and other related apps.

* Your system is using the older type of mechanical platter hard drive (HDD), Samsung model: SP2504C size: 232.83 GiB. You would see a huge overall system improvement in speed by getting and installing a Solid State Drive (SSD) especially for the bootable operating system which are reasonably priced, 128 gb SSD are around $20-$25us, 256gb for around $30+us.

Amazon.com : 128GB SSD
https://www.amazon.com/128GB-SSD/s?k=128GB+SSD

Amazon.com : 256gb SSD
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=256gb+SSD&cr ... nb_sb_noss

* Your system only has around 4gb of system memory RAM, Memory: 3.77 GiB used: 2.08 GiB (55.2%). Your system would run much better with more memory which is relatively inexpensive to get and install. Even a little more memory helps a lot, 2gb, 4gb, etc... When upgrading memory, you have to know how many memory slots your computer has and are being used and what memory is already installed to match it or replace it, check the installed memory chips.

Example: 2GB Memory RAM for Dell Dimension DXP061, 9150 Extreme, 9200 Essential 240pin PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 DIMM Memory Module Upgrade at Amazon.com
https://www.amazon.com/Dimension-Extrem ... B007MFGIHA

FYI: Not critical: Your "swap" file is only 1gb and from what I have read, it should be equal to how much memory you have which in your case is 4gb. This can be changed.

The option for Zoom for Linux is Zoom version 5.9.1 and states that it is for Mint versions 17.1+

This is normal.

Hi needsleep, what package did you download from the zoom website? If you use Linux Mint choose Mint package and choose your computer architecture. So far I have installed the .deb package using gdebi from the Zoom website and so far I haven't had any problems when I run the Zoom application.
The world is full of good people. if you can't find it, be one.
