terrible intermittent issue - can not restore windows

Post by otlichnik73 »

Hi there again, wonderful Linux world! Can someone help with a bizarre, very annoying, unresolvable intermittent issue:
On brand new installation of Mint 20 (installed Ulyssa, then upgraded to Una) - system info is below.
Issue:
1.User logs in
2. User clicks on an application launcher on a panel or in main menu, or a folder icon on desktop to open a folder
3. Window does not open, but appears as minimised on the panel
4. User restores the window by clicking on the panel, but the window is completely unresponsive
5. User attempts to log out/restart - but same issue appears with the logout window. User is forced to reboot by using the power button on the box
The issue disappears temporarily after reboot, but re-appears at some point later. I have not been able to determine the timing - but seems like perhaps it appears after the user has left the session idle for a period of time.
Thanks! System info:

Please post the results of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Any chance you are running out of RAM at the time? I would check with htop, or you can use System Monitor.

If that hard drive is also from 2013 maybe it's reached the end of it's usable life.

You can check it using the Disks program.

When you say it is intermittent, a couple of q's.
Can you post the output to:

Code: Select all

inxi -IJrxxz
How intermittent, I know you said it reappears at some point after a reboot but, every boot/5 min/completely random/after suspend etc?
Does it happen on certain software only - dtp/audio/web/network etc?
is there anything in your logs? (Menu/logs)
Can you right-click on each item that you have problems with on the desktop - do they have anything in common, ie firejail?
Does it happen if you start the programs from Terminal?
