Where Is This Notification Coming From?

Post by lannatwin »

Since updating to 20.3, I have been getting strange notifications. They show in the notification list for a minute, then disappear. The time shown on this one was totally off from my system time. Where's this coming from?

Could it be a website notification from your web browser? If you're not using an ad blocker in your web browser this might be likely. uBlock Origin is a good ad blocker. Or if you're using Firefox you can open Settings, go to Security & Privacy, scroll down to the Permissions section and click the Settings button next to Notifications. Is there any website on the allowed list? Maybe clear the list. I have it set there to never allow websites to ask to show notifications.

If that is coming from the web browser, I'd suggest deleting your profile (I assume the OP is using Firefox?) and starting fresh with a new profile.

I have a similar problem. Notifications display briefly then disappear so quickly I barely have time to read them. I got one yesterday (a couple of times) which was something about building the perfect girl. I assume it's some gaming or <violates forum rules> site or something (I'm not into either...). Today I saw one that mentioned dresnet, which appears to be an online casino of some sort. I looked in my settings in notifications, and the only possible suspect was "telegram", so I deinstalled it. But the notifications are still happening. How do I stop these infernal things?
Thanks,

Well, if it's coming from the browser, creating and using a new profile should fix it, although some would consider that the nuclear option (I don't, it's only a profile). Then install the extension uBlock Origin to help prevent this kind of thing from happening in the first place.

Of course there might be a way to fix it while preserving your current profile, but somebody with more "know-how" will have to answer that. You can start by clearing out all cookies and the cache.

@Schultz thanks for the tip.
I already have Adblocker Ultimate installed, is it worth uninstalling it and using uBlock Origin? I assume I can't use both together... I've cleared the cache and history (with some trepidation, I use history all the time), so I'll see if that makes any difference.
Thanks

that Adblocker Ultimate should be all that you need.

now, that you've cleared the cache, just sit tight, and see if it reoccurs, again.

I checked in Firefox. There were a couple sketchy websites with notifications enabled. Turned those off. We shall see.

To stop notifications (ads) appearing in the notification bar, if you're using Firefox Modzilla, go to the browsers' Settings> Privacy & Security> Notifications> and either block or remove the websites that appear in the list as allowed.
